I was wondering, is CGC a real title? Is it something you can get registered with AKC?
i.e. DOG WITH LONG OLE NAME CGC, CD, MACH
whatevers. lol. I have no idea about titles, sorry. Or is it just a "fun" title?
I ask because since we can now change our dogs AKC name (if needed, once I think), I'm giving Miko a kennel name (all he has is Miko last name of XH). And I'd like his CGC to show up behind his name assuming it is a real title of sorts. He won't be doing anything else, so that's why I'd like it. Koji, I hope, will have an agility title one day behind his name.
Thanks.
(p.s. I tried to search and boy the strange posts that came up, lol)

Anything awarded by the AKC (CKC in Canada) counts as a title and will automatically be added to the end of the name of a registered dog. The CGC (CGN in Canada) does not require that the dog be registered, but if he is registered, then CGC will automatically be added to the end of his registered name whenever it is used by the AKC. CGC is not something that you would include in the name when you choose to register him, it is just assumed there if he has earned it. So, for instance, if you want to register him as Puppy Miko, you wouldn't register him as Puppy Miko CGC ... the CGC will be added automatically by AKC if he has earned it, but will not be included on his registration papers.

one thing about name changing with AKC, if the dog is titled you can not change their name. I dont know if that applies to all titles or just champion titles

This is a great question and one I've been wondering about. Thank you so much for asking it, k9kreationz.
So, if I'm understanding this right, when I write down Edan's name - like in my sig below - I can put "Casia's Pistol Pete CGC". Can I also just use his call name for informal/non-AKC events in a similar manner (IE: Edan CGC)?
(I really don't like Edan's registered name but haven't been able to find a way to have it changed easily. The breeder already told me I could change it if I could figure out how. All she asks is that I leave her kennel name in front - which I'm perfectly OK with.)

Because I was concerned about the not being able to change the name if they are already titled, I emailed AKC. This was their response.
"CGC is an award and not a title so it will not appear on the dog's
title record. You can list it in any advertising you do (dog magazines) and on multi-generation pedigrees, etc."
Anyhow. Hope that helps anyone who was wondering the same.

Actually, CGC is not the same. We can add it to the end of our dog's names on sites or whatever, but, per AKC, in the pedigrees, it will not show up and it will not show up if you try to look up titles on your dogs. I spoke with AKC, since I already have 2 dogs with theirs and, even though, it is recognized it's not considered the same as a championship, agility, obedience, herding, etc. titles. You'll get a certificate and you can get a tag that says CGC on it, plus other things to show it off, but it won't be added to the end of the name. I only know this because I called and talked to them about it, since the pedigrees on our last litter didn't reflect Dreamer's CGC and that's what I was told. You can confirm this by calling them at (919) 233-9767 M-F 8:30am - 5:00pm EST.

Right, the way I understand it, it is an AKC certificate and not called a 'title', but you can definitely list it on your dogs name- it is an award your dog has rightly earned.
You are right Michelle, when searching the database, it does not show up. I often wondered why they did that, it is silly.
