I had the pleasure of spending this weekend with my good friend and breeder, Connie Nelson of Rabbit Run Shelties, at the Hartford Dog Show where yesterday Barkley's mom, Gemmy (Shelhaven Beauty Mark) took her first Best of Breed. It was a very exciting day! Gemmy is owned by Connie and was bred by Connie's partner, Karen Henley. of Shelhaven Shelties in Canada and sired by Connie's stud dog Ch Cindahope Trade Mark with Laureate Savanna White.
For those of you interested in getting involved in breed showing, I can't emphasize enough the importance of having a Connie before you begin. A mentor is the single most important thing you can have, even before you get a show puppy. I've learned so much sitting beside Connie at dog shows, where she's been generous in sharing her experience, information and wisdom about Shelties and showing.
The AKC recognizes this too, and now offers a Mentor Program for anyone not lucky enough to know someone like Connie. The AKC will connect you with someone who will guide you though the ins and outs of conformation and obtaining a show quality dog. You can find out more on the AKC website.
I am so grateful to Connie for taking me on and letting me follow her around to shows, answering my endless questions, and sharing her knowledge and friendship. Thank you Connie, and congratulations on Gemmy's wonderful win!! :biggrin2:

CONGRATS to Gemmy (and Connie too)!!!! That is really exciting news. Thanks for sharing the good news of Gemmy's win with us, Ann!
Gemmy's parents are my Joey's parents--so that makes Gemmy and Joey sister and brother, right? (several breedings apart...:rolleyes2:)
Gemmy is a real sweetheart and I think it's great she won BOB on Valentine's Day. That's wonderful, Ann, that you are training to show dogs with Connie as your mentor. You'll have to keep us up-to-date on your progress...:wink2:

Isn't it amazing how many of our pups are related through Shelhaven, Cindahope or similar lines? This is almost a Forum of canine cousins! :smile2:
Happy birthday to Kia!! :biggrin2: It's really hard to believe she's a year old, Elaine!
And speaking of birthdays, unless I'm mistaken our wonderful Sheltie Forum is a year old this month. It's also hard to believe we haven't had this community for much longer. A big THANKS to Kelly for all her hard work and the opportunity for all of us to Shelticize here!

Trademark is Bacca's great-grandad! We're just a little incestuous little bunch here! (I think I'm hearing a banjo playing "Deliverance" in the background somewhere!)
And he's got Cindahope's just "hopping" ("hopeing"?) all over his pedigree, going back at least 6 generations.
And happy anniversary to the forum! And huge hugs and thanks, of course to Kelly who keeps this running!

We all have great dogs and it is nice to see some are related. My friend Heidi has an 8 month old Cindahope sheltie named Cindahope Spiritwind of Carlin Hill and she sure is a beautiful dog.To bad we all couldn't get together and have a Sheltie Bash. That sure would be fun.

I agree! I've met so many great people on the forum! I'm envious of those of who who have managed to sync up and meet face to face!
