Ruckus is about 2 and 1/2 now. His coat is thin, and short! When will it fill out? if it ever will....
His dad's coat was just an inch from the floor and his mother was heavily coated for a female.
Is it something I am doing? I bath him bi weekly unless its winter beause he has grass allergies. I run a slicker brush over his coat weekly. In the winter he is thicker so I line brush weekly. Is the slicker brush hurting is coat?
Here is a pic of this boy's coat.

Hang in there. It's nothing you're doing -- it's just how Ruckus is. He may be a late bloomer..or he may, like my Annie Laurie, have an "old style Sheltie" coat. Either way, he's a beauty!!!

Thanks for the help. He is from some of the oldest bloodlines around and actually is one of the older style shelties. So I bet he just doesnt grow coat. Thanks a bunch!

Sometimes they don't get their coat until 3 or 4 years old. And some Shelties never get it. He's handsome, by the way.:winkgrin:

Thank you! I love him to bits, but I admit that i am a bit conscious about his looks. Everyone thinks he is a collie, or a mixed breed. Aussie, and even border collie. I get so tired of explaining that he is a big sheltie. And then they always say that they never seen one that looked like that before, and he must be a mix.
Some lady at the dog park flat out told me that I was wrong, and that he is an English Shepard! Then you should see the looks on their faces when I tell him that his parents are show dogs, and he was going to be until he got bigger.

People who aren't familiar with Shelties (and Sheltie mixes) in my town think that Treader is a Collie. One guy called him "Lassie-et".

Has your pupper been tested for thyroid. I have pupper with barely any hair compared to the rest and she has thyroid issues. My vet said thyroid problems can include slow growing hair or sparse hair

They are all different, Kia my sable and white is 7 months and has a nice soft coat but not full yet, although she is still young. My Sheltie angel, Jewel, had her full coat by this age. He probably got passed the older sheltie line gene. But what a handsome boy he is. I like the shorter puppy style coat . Easyier to line brush, not as much fur to deal with!!:wink2:

My parents male sheltie didn't get his coat till he was 3. Ruckus has a much nicer coat than Milo did at that age, its so thick! I know it would be nice for him to have the usual sheltie coat but he's honestly gorgeous the way he is. Be patient though, his coat may still come in!

I hope his coat comes in sooo long and thick! But if it doesnt oh well. I brush dogs all day at work (im a dog groomer) and it does get old brushing and brushing. less hair, less care.
