View Full Version : Potty Training In A Specific Spot In The Yard

We planted new sod this summer and aren't enjoying looking at all of the dead patches left by Sadie's pee.

My husband and I have been training Sadie to relieve herself in a specific corner of our back yard so that there is just one larger brown patch instead of many little patches every where. If we're successful it will also be nice to know that we don't risk stepping in any dog bombs randomly in the yard that we may have missed. My hope is that eventually we can just open the door and she'll run to her corner.

Sadie is stubborn and not liking the change. Some days she's so cooperative and I'm so proud of her. She gets lots of pats and treats those days! Other days she refuses to go unless until she's desperate, which is bad if we're trying to get her to pee before we leave for work. We have a phrase we use to make her go, and it usually works but some times she just stands there (or even sits or lies down) with a defiant look on her face as if to say, "Nope! I don't want to and you can't make me!"

It doesn't help matters that she's still having unexplained attacks of diarrhea and vomiting (Noted in Sadie has loose bowels again thread under health). Some times we're not sure if she's just being stubborn or if her bowel's are off and she doesn't need to go.

We're really trying to make it a positive experience for her, we get really excited when she relieves herself in the right place and bring a carrot out for her as a reward. Some days though she is so stubborn!

I just wondered if anyone else has tried this type of training?

We would have liked to start this when she was a puppy but couldn't. Our yard had no grass then and bad drainage so we had to constantly move her to the driest, least muddy space in the yard. Sadie is 13 months old today.

Hi Ontario-

I can't say I've tried to train Pogo to go in a certain spot. Of course, I live in a zero lot house and my "backyard" is nothing more than an oversized doggie litter box.

I've seen this product at Petsmart called "Pee Post". It's supposed to encourage your dog to "go" in a certain spot in the yard. It's pheromone-treated, so it's supposed to attract your dog. May take a couple of days for your dog to "get" it, but it may help. I'm not sure what I can suggest to help for #2. I guess I got lucky-mine just happens to favor a certain side of the yard.

I've read some posts on other forums that say you should bring the dog out on a leash to the favoured spot.

I'm not sure about the technique myself. It seems to me that if you have to bring her out on a leash then she'll only get used to it if you're standing right next to her. On the flip side, you can give instant reward.

I'm now trying to get Bacca out the back door on his own without me coming with him (winter is coming after all! No sense in both of us freezing!!:smile2: ) So I'm living with the brown spots.

Interesting side note: I actually don't have alot of brown spots. They come up only occasionally - as if something in his metabolism changed to create a more acid urine. So perhaps diet does have something to do with it.

I'm training Fred to go to a specific spot in the yard also. When I take him out, I take him to the potty corner and tell him his words of encouragement lol. Sometimes after he pees, he'll wander away, sniff, and then get into poo position, that's when I scoop him up and rush him to the corner. I started doing this less than a week ago and he's already gotten a lot better. When he's playing with our boxer in the yard, he'll forget and kind of go where ever, but I'm sure if we keep up the training it'll become natural for him to go to his corner.

Oh and I don't take him out on a leash either.

I do the same thing with Sadie. She doesn't have to many accidents in the back yard where she goes in the wrong place, mainly because she's an only dog and we're able to keep an eye on her. She's so stubborn though! This morning she peed in her spot but refused to poo. Since she was a pup she's ALWAYS had to do both in the morning. I even took her for a run and tried asking her to go afterward and she still refused. She gets such a belligerent look on her face. She usually gets her Kong full of peanut butter in her crate when I leave for work so I didn't give it to her today.

Luckily my husband will be home from work early today so she won't have to wait too long!

With four dogs, I'd have to get a permit for a toxic waste dump!
