Hello, my sable Jack is my first dog, so I am learning a lot as he grows. I hope one of you can help me decide if I need to investigate this further --
When I got Jack, his paw pads were pink. Then, they turned gray in the fall of last year. He is now one year old. His pads are entirely gray, but the largest pads on his back paws are dry looking and cracking. He doesn't seem to be in pain, but it looks like it hurts! One of the cracks is big.
Is there something that I have done (or not done) to cause this? Should I take him to the vet? Please help. Thank you.
My first Sheltie had very dry paw pads. I used balm that I had for my horses, but that got all over the floors and rugs and she loved to lick it off!:( I had good luck with this, which won't hurt if your pup licks it and isn't too messy. You can also order it online. It's Hartz Rosemary Skin Paw Care Balm:

Unless you find the large crack is getting infected you should be OK with an antibiotic/antiseptic salve. But I'd ask your vet when next you see him. Good luck! :wink2:

Hi Luvmysable,
I agree with Ann try that salve but sometimes it's just reassuring to bring the dog to the vet. If this has been something that has been plaging him for awhile I wouldn't hesitate to at least call the vet and she what they suggest. Good luck and keep us informed with what happens ok .:smile2:

The salve is good adice to try, but it seems odd to me that these problems are happening so young. I would probably check with my vet, also. I've had seniors with dry paws, but never a young Sheltie. Good luck!

If the other suggestions don't work, you might try Animax which I've used for several skin conditions on my Shelties. http://www.1800petmeds.com/Animax-prod10321.html
