Thanks! Yeah, I'd suspected as much, but had hoped that maybe she'd keep most of her light color.

My Boy Justice is a very dark Sable. He looks almost black to some people. His dad was a bi black.

You could see hints of his future color here at 5 weeks old

By 10 wks he had turn a little red color except for his totally black tail.

By 15 weeks, you can see the dark hair coming back around the shoudlers, note the tail the is total black.

I would say Ida will likely be a shade lighter than her mother. But then Sables are not my color. :smile2:

Ida's mother looks a little odd to me. I've never seen a sable with that shading. I'm thinking she had a liver colored sheltie in her lines. She doesn't have the normal black overlay that you always see, it's more brown.:confused2:

I didn't think anything looked strange about her coloring, some shaded sables can have more red in their coats. My parent's sheltie does. Plus often black shading will fade to red when they're in the sun a lot. Toby, my tri turns red/liver in the summer.

But I'm no expert, I could be wrong. :smile2:

Her mother just doesn't have a ton of overlay. Still well within normal. I've had dogs with minimal shading before.
Liver and blue (not blue merle) are dilution genes. Even if there were a dilute dog in her background, it wouldn't partially show in her. Either she would be a dilute or she wouldn't. It's kind of like saying (and there are some silly people out there who believe this is true) that a sable isn't as rich in color because there is a merle parent (sable bred to blue). It either expresses itself or it doesn't. Though a dog can carry the *gene* as a recessive for dilute blue/liver and not show it, but then the dog would still be a normal sable/bi black/bi blue. There would be no difference in color.

Well, I thought I was pretty good at sheltie colors. I've spent days just studying them over and over again. But now I know I still have a lot to learn! I love learning new things about this wonderful breed! Keep the replies coming!

People say the same thing about blues from sable/merle breeding, that the blue will be rusty and not clear. (thus justifing breeding double merles as the blues from a double merle is suppose to be clear:rolleyes2:)

Ember and her Bi blue sister Bella are from a sable to Blue Merle breeding and her blue is very clear and bright. In fact, her dad was a blue merle from a Tri and a sable merle(who was herself sable and blue merle breeding) breeding so if that theory was true her blue should be very rusty.
