Default What Does Your Dog See? (And how it relates to the sport)

A good friend of mine is a dog ophthalmologist and she posted on my old agility club's blog a really interesting post about what a dog can and can't see and how it relates to the sport.

Thought I'd share it here because it was really interesting for me!

That is why the teeter is yellow on the bottom then? This is interesting.

There is an app available for Android, and probably iOS as well, that is called 'dog vision'. It is free, and when you have it installed on your phone, your camera allows you to see, in a split frame, how you see things, and how your red/green colorblind dog sees them. You can take a 'snapshot' of those views and save them, too. I use it in class when I teach the genetics of colorblindness in humans, but agility people could use it to review the course before they run it with their dogs.

This is why I buy mostly blue dog toys. After seeing the toys via 'dog vision', blue was obviously the color with the most 'pop'.

That is a cool app. I always thought my dogs had an affinity for yellow, pink and orange toys and now I can see that it all looks yellowish and really stands out. Very cool.

How interesting. I had heard that blue pops the most to dogs and assumed it was due to a color blindness of sorts.

My question is....what does this mean for the dogs when they have a red AF and yellow contact? I've seen those around. Wonder if it matters to them since they'd see it as all yellowish. :) More missed contacts? LOL. I doubt it, but just thought that was interesting.

Just thinking out loud here, but my guess is that if colors are the same, the dog is being more selective about some other part of the image it sees, like maybe texture or shape.

Honestly, I think that unless you train color-specific the dog doesn't understand that the correct behavior is to be in the "yellow". That's why most training criteria have to do with strides or body position--not a visual cue like that.
