Mine are on the three-year plan -- much better!

Very interesting. I'm on the 3 yr plan with our 2 dogs, no matter what, keeping rabies current so I'm never in the position of losing a dog over not having that vx. With 2 of our old dogs, both lived to be 12-15, and their last vax rec'd, both were very ill. I knew they had a heavy load of vax, we faithfully went to get vax annually. This is in the last 10 yrs, and that vet never never suggested we ease off. We see a dif vet now. When I call for spring appt/checkup/HW test & meds, I say no vax this year. Then I get in the exam room, what's laid out? Tons of needles full of vax! I just say, please remove those, we won't need them. The techs often look upset, but the vet never says a word. He knows my view & doesn't argue with me.

I worked for an Old School vet back in the day (late 80's) and he freq. gave half doses of vax to older dogs, I thought he was being cheap (he was a frugal man rest his soul) but now I wonder if he didn't like the lifetime load? Can anyone comment, was that practice safe, unsafe or just neutral?

ClantyreSheltie, we lived in fear of kennel cough back then! It rarely cropped up, but when it did, it called for a complete cleaning of the entire facility, top to bottom, as well as isolating possible carriers or animals who maybe couldn't take getting kennel cough on top of whatever brought them in the door. I'm glad to know it's less of a problem, cause it was such a huge problem when it happened.
