Default Replacement for Interceptor

Hi everyone,

I have a 8 year old sheltie with allergies. I had been giving him Interceptor and that was working well but I heard that Interceptor may not be produced for awhile.I was wondering what other forms of heartworm protection people use for shelties? I am aware of the issues that the herding breed gene can cause with some of the other products, like Heartguard. I am also particularly worried since my sheltie has allergies so he is extra sensitive. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. My vet has recommended Revolution - anyone have bad experiences with that?

A second question - I took my dog to the vet yesterday for an ear infection. While there the vet suggested that I start my dog on permenant allergy medicine. She recommends Atopica and Ketulonazole - anyone have any bad/good experiences with either?

Thanks very much.

I cant help you specifically with a monthly replacement, but there have been a few discussion recently about replacements for Interceptor. Here's one to get you started http://www.sheltieforums.com/showthr...rceptor&page=2

I had Hunter on Intercepter as well and was unable to get it. My vet put him on Heartguard. I had heard all the negative things about it and Shelties. Hunter is doing very well on it. I was worried because Hunter does get seizures.
My previous male Sheltie had allergies. He use to get a staph ingection on his skin from it. I used a tropical lotion. I am sorry I do not remember what it was. These hot spots did have an order as well. I don't know if the lotion helped or he grew out of the allergies. As he grew older, I had no trouble with it. Good luck!

I used Interceptor and thought it would be back this year. The vet told one of our family members, that they could not produce this med because they also produced human medications. I was on Pet Direct and they ask for an RX prescription for any of their meds. Geesh the prices have gone up.

They gave her Heartguard, but that pill the vet stated does not kill hook and whip worms like Interceptor did, if needed. I swear its like so many products you find and like, something that works well, all of a sudden its gone. Really disgusting.

I am hoping someone buys Interceptor out that it can be produced again. I bought the last pills the vet had to get my two through the period. Was suppose to come back in 2013, now that might be questionable.

You can test for the MDRI gene mutation. I tested my dogs when I first heard Interceptor was on hold (Sheltie and Aussie). Luckily, neither of my dogs tested positive, so I now use Heartguard.

I've been using Interceptor Spectrum, available via mail order from Australia. Same formula, just with a tapeworm repellant added. No prescription required; it comes in the form of a chewable "treat." The dogs love it.

We sent away for a kit, which comes with instructions on how to get a cheek swab, includes a tool that looks like a spiral toothbrush, and how to pack up to ship back. It was very easy to do. You don't pay until you send it back. My mother and I shared a kit, 7 dogs between us, so it was $60/dog. Took 2.5 weeks to get results and all our dogs were normal.
