Default Can a dog fail the rib test?

So Sca fails the rib test but otherwise seems close to good weight. Now besides being large Sca is STRONG! I mean real tough and jumps around a bunch. While I cannot feel his ribs it almost feels like muscle though. So is it possible or is this another in his endless schemes to get more food?

I have never seen it but I guess it is possible I have seen dogs the other way, no rib fat and fat everywhere else. For Diva it is the only place she gets fat and if I can not feel the ribs I know she is getting heavy. Actually Ember too. But I like to keep my dogs lean.

Other places to check are over the sternum, over the spine, the loin shoulders and neck. There is not alot of muscle over the ribs in dogs at all.

My guess would be that he may just be a touch heavy. Maybe if you took just a couple pounds off of him his ribs would feel just right. If he's good everywhere else, it may just be that he's holding onto all of the extra (even just a few pounds) in the ribs.

I'd go ahead and take a bit of weight off of him. For dogs performing in performance sports especially I like to see them a little lean. It's better on their bodies long term.

Sally failed the rib test last winter so I adjusted food and she lost about 4.5 lbs and passed the rib test. Seems like Sca is pretty active so decreasing food slightly may be the answer. DON'T tell Sca that i suggested this, I doubt he would forgive me !!!

When I first started the cutback I thought I was doing it very gradually so it wouldn' be so hard on her, but that was when she began to lick her bowl and shove it around until it was in the middle of the floor- subtle, real subtle. the cat's bowl gets licked and shoved around too, just in case Punkin misses a morsel and a total decrumbing of the kitchen floor ends the meal. She does get VERY small tastes of whatever we are having at mealtime-mostly the veggies so not too calorie dense. And turkey jerky with her evening thyroid pill, so she gets plenty.

Deska failed the rib test with the specialist a few months ago. Then when we saw her last week she said it was good to see I was keeping him light as his body shape felt excellent. The only thing he had lost in that time was undercoat - he had actually put on 0.4kg!
