Liver biopsy report came in today...no sign of cancer! Her liver is damaged and the specialist feels the damage is due in total to the preds Pixie has been on for 4 years to control her IBD. We have tried 3x to wean her off the preds only to have a severe flare up of the IBD and long hospitalizations. However, with her body's recent very positive reaction to the RC Hypoallergenic food, our vet feels we may have a much better chance of weaning her off the preds this time without causing a flare up...and we have to try since the preds are destroying her liver and will kill her. If a flare up does result once off the preds, then we will try the anti-rejection medication, Cyclosporine, which has shown some positive results in keeping IBD in remission without the damage potential to the liver (although it can have other negative side effects...so hopefully we won't have to go that route).

At this point we continue Denamarin and add Ursodiol (typically used to clean sludge from gall bladder, but in this case will be for managing bile flow), add 50 units per day of vitamin E, and slow weaning off of preds with fingers crossed it works. I was assured that her liver is not so far damaged that it cannot regenerate if we can find a safe way to keep her IBD in remission without drugs that continue to harm the liver.

So... we do still have a long road to travel to good health, but everyone's hopes are very high that our little Pixie will win this one. She is a tough little fightesr who loves life...and those traits will stand her well in the days and weeks ahead. And we have really dedicated vets who never stop trying to get to the bottom of an issue even when the answers are not immediately apparent...bless them!

Once again, I cannot thank everyone enough for your continued words of support these past weeks as we watched Pixie's health nose dive and then were waiting for the biopsy results and wondering if we were going to be facing a very sad decision time for our wee lass.

    Trini and Pixie :smile2:
