I might look into switching to Trupanion after this thread. VPI's minimum plan costs me about $120 a year, which for me is a reasonable cost. I did consider cutting it at some point when money was tight but decided to keep it for now. I want some peace of mind if a major illness strikes, is the main thing. I don't expect insurance to cover ordinary things.

I have been looking at insurances and am ALMOST settled on Healthy Paws. Lots of great reviews. VPI still only reimburses for "reasonable cost" and they have guidelines they use. If you have to go to emergency after hrs care or your vet is particularly pricey you will not get much reimbusement. Healthy Paws says it pays the ACTUAL out of pocket cost up to 90% I believe on some of the plans.

Default Pet Insurance

I often thought about getting pet insurance.I wish I had it last week between Sting's ear infections and his seizure.Luckily I have an account set aside for emergencies now.

I had debated putting Liam on the insurance. I am so glad I did. I also get a multi-pet discount for having the three on it.

My pleasure :)

I have my three dogs on insurance. I'm so glad I do. As I said, it literally saved my big girl's life last year. Get it when they are young, when the premiums are cheaper, and at least with Petplan, the rates never go up. My big, old girl's policy renewed a few months ago after the 7k surgery, and my rate didn't budge. Can't recommend them enough!

I love how the article basically says "It's not worth it...until your dog gets sick or injured." Well what dog doesn't get sick or injured at some point during their lives?! And a higher deductible makes for a cheaper rate by far.

Thanks for the article. We did end up going with Healthy Paws. They are really responsive when you email them with any type of question.
