Unhappy 14 Year old with a heart murmur

Hi everyone, I am new to this site and just looking for a little information.

My 14 year old Satie was just diagnosed with a heart murmur (6 out of 6 on the scale). She doesn’t eat like she used to, sleeps all the time, and doesn’t seem to have any energy anymore. She has had a bad cough for a little while and drools all the time. After talking to the Vet, we have decided it is probably in Satie’s best interest if we put her to sleep. I’ll be making that dreadful trip on Monday morning.

My question is, Has anyone had this situation were the Shelties quality of life improved with medication to a point where she wouldn’t be in any discomfort ? or is the Monday morning trip inevitable. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Kevin

Kevin - my heart just breaks for you. My Emma has a slight murmur, not to the extent that yours does. I think, as hard as it would be, if one of my three was in the situation, I would probably be making the trip you are. When the quality of life is not there and you know in your heart that it is best, we have to make the decision to let them go. You can tell by the look in their eyes.

My Cody died from heart failure. He was 12. He had a murmer when I bought him and lived a healthy life until later. He was put on lasik (spelling) which did help but, he would pee while standing right by me. It gets rid of the fluid and I don't think he even knew he was peeing. One night, he just could not breath anymore and I had him put down the next morning. Putting a beloved family member down is a very personal decision. You will know when it is time. My heart is with you at this time while you decide what to do.

My heart beaks for you. I have no experience with murmurs but I do know how hard it is to say good bye. Just like everyone else said you just know when it is time. Some how they are able to tell you. For us we knew by the look in Hollie's eyes.
