Default Trimming those ears...

Does anyone have any tips on how to trim ear hair? Cosmos is getting pretty long, and I see pictures of all these lovely looking ears, but I'm nervous to get the scissors out and go for it.... I'm working on getting a pair of thinning shears for the job, but I don't want to make him look like a goofball

Thats the current state of his ears... Excuse the shaved leg, he has LCPs, so got his first FHO. Looks kind of goofy haha.
