Sheltie or a Miniature Collie - the great debate!

To be perfectly honest, I thought it was pretty common knowledge among sheltie enthusiasts. I can't seem to locate my Sheltie Talk book, but I know it has a chapter about Sheltie history. Maybe it says something there? Anyways, I'm glad to have answered your question to some degree!

And developed in basically a commercial kennel, if I remember my National Symposium right. There were two types originally, and they chose the mini-Collie "look", probably because it sold better.

There are known and suspected Collie crosses, and cases where the UK Kennel Club was paid off to amend a pedigree with a Collie to show a Sheltie so AKC would accept the pedigrees.

Given the Rough Collie lineage, I wonder about the notion that there was Borzoi bred into the collies. The head shape certainly looks Borzoi and neither that nor the coat length appears to have been typical of collies prior to the end of the nineteenth century.

Well, I was specifically wanting to find where it said it in Sheltie Talk because I know it's a book Barb has. In Sheltie Talk, in the first chapter, under A Brief History, 8th paragraph, it says "Influence of the Greenland Yakki dogs, the King Charles Spaniel, and both the Welsh and Scotch working Collie was evident in the early Sheltie." Now, it doesn't specifically say "spitz", but I think the Greenland Yakki Dog was a spitz-type dog. Now this discussion is getting truly interesting! I wish I had time on my hands to catalogue all the interesting insight that has been provided so far!

To me, its fascinating that they can look like a mini-collie, but perhaps have very little of collie in them?????? But mixed with other breeds that had collie in them too, that it developed the collie-like type. Did I misread the post?

Yes Collies were the last breed that was bred into present day shelties, as late as the 1930's (and possibly later) Collies were bred in. It was quite scandalous as many pedigrees had missing "pieces" especially in the UK. There is a whole mention about it either on sue bowlings site, or some place else I cant remember.
