Thanks, All! I will try bringing him to the car and feeding him there, when we get our own car back. I got rid of the stinky cigarette smell in the rental car by returning it and asking for a replacement...which is much better. I was right about Sammy's fear and rejection of me. It was the awful smell that he hated. As soon as I got rid of the cigareets he came back to me! What a silly pup! Janet

I think you're a very smart puppy Mommy to figure out it was the yucky smell that was bothering him! Way to go!!

Enough to make one quit smoking. Wish my pups disliked me for that. They do stink, and ya burn up money. Hard habit to quit.
Smart pup, smart mom. Glad all is well. |

Personally, I think that it's a fluke about the cigarette smelling car.
Dogs associate things with either good outcomes or bad outcomes. That's how we train our dogs to sit, stay, come, etc. Car rides for most dogs mean a trip to vet or the evil groomer. If you want your dog to have good car rides, then you have to ensure that the end of the trip is a happy outcome. Maybe not all the time, but some of the time. So yes, a car ride should sometimes be a trip to the park, or the pet store, etc. |
