They do grow out of it. Bella used to destroy any book she got ahold of. Lil'Bit and Gigi were both into tearing up paper and dragging tissue paper throughout the house.

All are pretty mellow now, save for the occasional tiff with roommate's dog who is a bit rude at times.

Sometimes they just don't outgrow the paper thing. Every "proper" Sheltie has a paper fetish. Neechee shredded an entire box of kleenex at the tender age of 16 as retalliation(?) against my being gone for 10 hours. Not that he was alone or unwalked or unsocialized - my dad did all that. It was because I, myself, was gone. Go figure.

Dr Shellie is right few dogs(and people as well) are well trained. It takes time and patience. It took my Beau a long time to trust and to behave, but, he's 99% there.

awww
you're definitely not alone!
Can't add to what Shelli said... it takes patience and work and a willingness to learn, so you're definitely on the right track!!!
Remember this moments, because soon enough people WILL be asking you all for advice because your dog is awesome and they are in your shoes!
And not all of them will be half as willing to put in the work and time and commitment it takes, like you are!

It does get better for sure My Kara Sheltie everone loved her that just passed away was the perfect friend she was perfect she would walk off leash great and never left our sight

we now have a 1.5 year old Boy and he is a work in progress at the age of 6-12 mo my wife kept asking if he was ever going to get there and I told her he would be a great boy someday well now he is getting there he still barks a lot but it is just his way of talking to us.

we were crazy enough to have just gotten a new puppy in december thats now 13 weeks and the fun starts all over but I'm sure with time she will be a great friend also it just takes time

best advice from me is to never loose your cool and lots of patience even when they find their own jobs LOL
