Default Pyoderma- to shave or not to shave?

For dogs with recurrent skin infections, is it better to clip the hair short? I'm very hesitant to clip Alphies hair.

I have also read antibiotic therapy should be continued a week after recovery, which is about 3,4 weeks. Sounds like a long time to be on pills! Does anyone have experience with pyoderma? Alphie has it every year from April to October. I feel like a bad owner for not being able to make him better.
