Default My sheltie,Marcus,is going blind

My Marcus is going blind and deaf. I used hand signals for his deafness but now it's hard for him to see the hand signals. Is anyone else dealing with this kind of situation?

Welcome to the forum. I am so sorry to hear about your Marcus.

A friend of mine has a sheltie that has gone blind. Sadie gets around very well still.
Mary (my friend) says she does not plan on ever moving around any of the furniture.
Basically, Sadie has remembered where everything is. She can go down one step out of the side of the house to the backyard on her own. Mary does follow her out into the yard and stays there with her till Sadie does her business, then they both come in. I have seen Sadie do this. She is an amazing sheltie. To watch her navigate around you would never know she was blind.
Sadie does have her full hearing, though.

There are some members here on the forum that have blind and or deaf shelties.
Maybe they can give you some insight.

Michele French has Mia - a deaf and blind girl. She has does amazing with her. She would be a good one to bounce ideas off of.

And noses are really the number one thing for Shelties.

My Angel Pavi was almost completely deaf and perhaps 70% sight impaired at the time of his death at 12 years old. The only effect it had was he wouldn't come when called unless he was facing you because he couldn't hear you call him, and he barked at more dumb stuff than usual because he couldn't tell what things were. Otherwise, he was fine in the house and with the inside and outside stairs. Plus, we have a trail in front of our cabin and he could negotiate it just fine. The 'nose knows' in Shelties!

Hollie was loosing both her sight and hearing. She had no trouble getting around. However we learned quickly how easy it was to startle her when she was asleep and sometimes she would nip out of fear. We then began to wake her by gently blowing in her face then she would not get spooked.

I actually found it beneficial when she could't hear as well. That meant less fear of loud noises. Especially thunder.
