Yeah, it ain't the dog.....
Hmmmm... when Olive was about 6 mths, so even tinier than her 14"-ish self, we went to the local frou-frou pet store to pick out a new toy. Olive had an accident and I whipped a poop bag out of my pocket and cleaned it up. The manager saw this and her jaw dropped - not at the accident but at my being prepared and cleaning it up.

Reading about your experiences in your store, I wonder if the store manager was thinking Olive was just another tiny dog...

I don't have an issue with small dogs being picked up - not only for their own safety but because they are a little dangerous for those of us less steady on their feet, easy to trip over.

Frankly, a dog that's badly behaved in their owner's arms is going to be badly behaved with all four on the floor! Sounds like the woman needs to do some training herself - laughing when their dog growls for no reason is not an appropriate response. You've also got to feel sorry for the dog that still feels so unsafe in it's owners arms it has to growl.

We had to watch a college friend of DH's dwarf chihuahua (3-4lbs "on a fat day" according to the owner). After a few hours of the thing being a terror, we started counting down until the owner came back. They keep her normally in a greyhound-sized crate all night and it seems, never take her for a walk (and did not leave us a collar or leash, we had to cobble something small enough together). Of course she is barely pee pad trained and the owner tried to give us potty training advice

It odd really, because when Beau and I are in our favorite pet store, I have him on a leash, if a dog comes in and Beau growls, we go out, period, isn't this what responsible pet parents/human parents are suppose to do? He only gets to stay and get treats if he behaves properly, but, then again, maybe I'm the one off my rocker
