Sammy and I went walking today with our friend and her 2 dogs, Mocha the big sweet mutt, and Lily the Border Collie. Lily is a typical Border Collie, full of energy and fun even at 13 years of age. As we started our walk Lily began barking for no reason. So my friend shaped her hand into a phone, put it up to her ear, and said, "Papa, Lily's acting up again!" I couldn't believe my eyes, but Lily quit barking and hung her head in total submission. Oh, I laughed to hard! She said it works every time. Janet

I'm cracking up. LOVE those BCs. I had one for a few days as a foster. She was a great dog and so incredibly smart. My hubby wanted to keep her. Sounds like your friend stays one step ahead of her smart pup!

I had BCs for years - both mine and a long line of fosters. They were all a quirky as all get out, but in a mostly funny and endearing way.
Several of my dogs learned some pretty astonishing feats. My favorite was when some friends of mine would come over every Saturday night to play cards. They had an 18 month old little girl that I was godmother to, so she was with me pretty often. Max learned to babysit while we were playing cards. At first, he just followed her around, then we noticed that he would very gently edge her away from both sets of stairs if she got too close. He would also do this with the fireplace. Eventually, they would lie down on the floor and she would use Max for a back rest and they would share her sippy mug. It was so cute! He also was beat up by my cantankerous old Siamese cat when he was a puppy (after annoying the cat all day, he was mildly savaged with a swat on the nose and a very annoyed hissing session). From then on, whenever he heard a meow (either cat-generated or human imitation), he would leap terrified into the arms of the nearest human. When he hit his adult weight of 70 pounds, this was a little bit disconcerting, especially if you weren't expecting it.

My agility training always jokes that BC's can count. She swears that they follow the numbers when running a course and they concentrate so hard on the numbers they forget to jump high enough and knock bars
