Default Question: vomiting

Hi All,

OK, Boots seems to have vomiting and the runs today.
Vomiting in the morning, runs later at potty time, relatively solid at the dog park, but now this evening more vomit after eating 1 french-fry.

I know the french-frys aren't good for him, however he wasn't touching his food, didn't seem interested even when I pulled my double cheese-burger apart and offered him a patty!
He did seem interested in the french fry, however 15 minutes later he's coughing it back up.

I'm fairly certain its one of 2 things, as he doesn't seem to be in any noticeable distress or bloating.

1. New 3# bag of Nylabone Corn & Wheat dog chews from Costco. Opened it yesterday and gave him one, loved it.
Later in the evening, had to move the bag, and they do smell good, so he heard me or the bag and came trick-or-treating.
So I gave him another one.
While it looks like I am just terrible at feeding him a sane diet, he is normally on one of the TOTW Grain-free flavors, or the occasional raw chicken menu.

If these were bad, then I'm surprised it took 12 or more hours to show up as vomit.
Or maybe, since it did show up after 12 hours, why was it still in his stomach?

2. Just a while ago my wife told she pulled a mushroom out of the area she walked him last night. So, he may have ingested a piece of one last night, which could be the issue. Not really sure if he nibbled on it or not.
He should know better, last year he did that and I had Hydrogen Peroxide down him in 15 minutes and got it out of him.

I'm planning on keeping him hydrated, and if he still shows vomiting by tomorrow, off to the emergency clinic.

Any suggestions?

The Nylobone is suspect to me.

No more food for 24 hours (he will live), then reevaluate. Make sure he's hydrated. If you can get Slippery Elm Bark Powder at a local health food store, give him some of that. It is wonderful at settling stomachs.

I agree with Clantyre...it could be the Nylabones. This week I bought some sweet potato chews -- made in the US and supposed to be the "vegetable alternative to rawhide" and three of my four threw them up in pieces starting a full day afterward. One didn't throw it up for two days but then it reappeared.

I fed boiled, shredded chicken breast mixed with rice for two days and then gradually phased back in their kibble and they seem OK now. I would also fast him first too until the vomiting stops. Keep him drinking...ice cubes or a bit of chicken broth mixed in water will help. Slippery elm is good and you can also pick up some acidopholis in the drugstore and add it to food for a week or so.

Good luck and let us know how he does!

Friday we gave Olive her first greenie, and I wasn't worried at all about it, as my previous sheltie Pavi loved them and ate them frequently. Olive, however, is not Pavi, and has had diarrhea ever since. It is what my son calls a 'poop-tastic adventure' Olive is sensitive to certain grains, most notably wheat and corn, so I am blaming the greenie as it contains wheat proteins. Most Nylabone flavors have wheat in them as well, so it might be the culprit in your case.

You are feeding dog chews that are made from corn and wheat??? That would be my first suspect. Yikes!

Barb, my bad, they are Wheat and Grain free.

So, he vomited a couple of more times and I ended up taking him to the Emergency Clinic. Vitals were fine, blood panel was perfect, and x-rays were clear except for some air in the colon which I gather is normal for gastroenteritis.

They gave him the saline bolus over the back, and said no water/food until the next day, and keep it bland.

Has been rather mopeish today, however no vomiting until about 5 minutes ago. I believe my wife gave him a little rice this afternoon. He hasn't been drinking water, however he had quite a lump on him last night, so that may be why.

He had his Parvo shot last year, and I gave him some Dog Worms 3 over a week ago, so I'm relatively confident its not one of those.
If he's not drinking normally tomorrow, I think its off to my vet for GI-specific assistance.

-- We just got some Pepto Bismo down him, we'll see if that helps.

This happened to Hollie once and it turned out she picked up her illness from the feral cats that frequented our yard. Bland diet and antibiotics and she was better. I did end up finding cat feces full of worms buried in my flower bed so I am sure thats where it came from.
