Default Sheltie does not want to eat

My sheltie will be 11 in May. He has always been a picky eater and quite thin. He has started to not want to eat his meals. I fed him 1/3 cup of Blue Buffalo in the am and pm. He became very picky about it and would eat sometimes. I added about 1tbs. of canned Blue Buffalo to the kibbles and he was crazy about it first. Lately, he will not eat in the am. and may or may not eat in the pm. He does not act ill in anyway. He is on meds. for a low thyroid and wonder if something is going on there. He has not been very active for a few months now either. I just thought it was age. Does anyone have any advice for me? I would like any feedback. He is due his yearly physical in June.

When was the last time you had his thyroid level checked?

Since it sounds like this has been going on for a few days at least, I'd take him to the Vet and see what they say. Sometimes the Vet will just give you something to settle their stomach and an anitbiotic just as a precaution.

A check up sounds in order and maybe some blood work too. Your dog is a senior now and should be seen for a loss of appetite.

Thank you everyone for the reply. The thyroid has not been checked since when??? Before I left Indianapolis IN. for MN. my vet did a senior blood panel. Does that include thyroid? He has been lethargic lately as well. Since he is due his annual exam in June, I think I will make an appt. right away. The vet here in MN. has not done blood work on him and I have been here almost 14mos. now. You guys are so great in advice.

I would definitely have the thyroid checked - it sounds like it is off some way and you may need to do an adjustment in the meds.

Let us know how you make out.

Definitely, get the thyroid checked.

While Bacca was being diagnosed, he went off about every food I tried him on for a good 6 month period. Then his thyroid meds finally kicked in and he started eating again.

Over the last few years, I've learned that if I miss a few meds, he will go off his food all over again and will act weird at meal times (i.e. wanting to eat by himself with no noise).

Since I've discovered this, I'm fanatical about making sure he gets his meds 12 hours apart, and not to miss a treatment.

Hope this helps
