Hi. I am new to the forum. I am a Sheltie lover. I have been the devoted owner of four Shelties. Two sable and white and two tri-color beauties. I currently have one sable and white female who is 10 years of age named Amber and a tri-color male who will is three named Jackson. Today I notices a large movable mass near the top of her right hind leg. Of course I will call our vet first thing in the morning, but I want to sleep tonight. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? It is large -- about 7 inches in diameter and completely soft and moveable.
Thank you. |

Welcome to the forum. I think your best bet would be to call your vet in the morning as you have planned, I wouldn't want to venture a guess on a lump that size.
Please do let us know what your vet says, wishing you and your Sheltie well.

It could possibly be a lypoma which is a fatty mass and occurs in older dogs. We had this years ago with one of our shelties and we were told it wasn't anything to worry about. Our daughter's dog is experiencing the same thing right now. But I would consult a vet.

It does sound like a fatty tumor as others have described. We've had two Shelties with them...one who had numerous ones, some very large. The vet removed them when they interfered with his movement, but left others alone. Your vet will likely aspirate the lump and can then tell you what it is.

My female Sheltie, Amber, is 10 years of age. I discovered a very large mass (about the size of a large orange) on her right hind leg near her body the other night. It is soft and fills like jello. I have an appointment with the vet on Monday afternoon. She is running around, eating and acting like herself. Could this be something serious?

Amber is in my prayers.
Please let us know how she does, Monday, at the vets. Thanks.

Just wanted to chime in that I also had a sheltie with many fatty tumors, I did not realize how common they were. The vet checked all of them to be sure. He got so many of them, they kept a drawing of a dog and marked the spots they had checked (a map of fatty tumors). The map got more and more spots on it as he got older. They did eventually remove some as they got really large, but I believe only so they would not bother the dog.
Definitely have your vet look at it though to be sure. |

Thank you all for helping to ease my mind until Amber and I visit the vets on Monday.
