In need info on the frequency of the Sheltie breed to acquire a brain tumor? Is this common within the breed ? Anythingto prevent this from happening, ? What tests should be given to the mother/ or puppy to rule this out ?
I am interested in getting a Sheltie puppy but I scard of getting a dog and it has a brain tumor ? How common is this in this breed ? What age does this happen ? Any prescreening precautions to take before buying a puppy ? Thanks for your help |

This is an interesting question... may I ask why you are asking this?
I don't believe it is common occurrences in shelties. Don't get me wrong, it could happen to any type of dog but chances remain small. I also believe tumors develop later on in life therefore it would be a waste of time to try testing for this on the mom or the puppies. It's like in humans, sure some cancers are hereditary but others are caused by a combination of lifestyles or exposure to cancerous chemicals/factors. All in all we are not quite sure what can cause this. Most common health problems for shelties can be found on this webpage : http://www.sheltieplanet.com/health-problems.php You will see hip dysplasia, eye problems, liver problems, etc. You should look for a breeder who does health testing for these common problems and a breeder who has a long line of healthy dogs. It is not common in the breed. There is no way to test for the likelihood to develop a brain tumor.
I am also curious why this is your big concern. Of all of the issues a sheltie can have, this one is pretty unlikely and I would doubt hereditary in shelties |

It sounds as if this happened in your life -- to a dog or person. If so, I am so sorry. Like any breed, Shelties have their potential health issues, but brain tumors are not one of them.

The sire of our very first sheltie passed away from a brain tumor at the age of 4. That was 30 years ago. We have had 4 shelties since, known lots of sheltie people and breeders and have never heard of it since so I would consider it to be a rare thing to happen in the breed.
