I was just wondering what the stages of coat growth were.. I was never blessed with a full coat in my other. I did ask the breeder, and she said she would get her full coat around 1-2 years old, but I was wondering the stages. She is 11.5 weeks old, and I think she has a nice coat (very thick!) I was wondering what it looks like at different stages, and when the texture changes. Please post pics of your fur babies!:biggrin2:

If you go to the fuzzy photo updates section I have been posting weekly pics of Hanna, sable merle, born Jun 3, 2013 starting at 10 weeks - (It's called Hanna Mondays if you do a search). Week 36 coming up.

Be prepared for the coat to look pretty short and not very sheltie like at about 3-4 months, but then it starts to come in. Hanna at 9 months is really looking like a sheltie.

At the end of the year I will put up a link with one photo for each week for a whole year.

My new puppy Lars was very fluffy and cute. Now, at about 4 months onward, he looks like he has no undercoat. I'm hopeful that the color is true, because it's a beautiful red.

Hang in there Junebug - they go through that phase where they seem to be growing faster than their coat can keep up, but in a few months he's going to start growing that adult coat. Sheltie puppies are lovely, but that is only a hint of how beautiful they grow up to be.

Dickens had a ridiculously short coat at three months; I was beginning to wonder if I hadn't been sold a fake Sheltie! It started growing out at five months, but I'm pretty sure he'll never have one of those big, fluffy "show" coats. Below is a picture showing him at three and sixteen months. Your pup has already outdone him, so I'd imagine his coat will be even fuller than Dickens's as he ages.

Just for comparison, this one is at thirteen months. There's definitely a difference.

Don't worry, I know. I know it's a stage, and I'm waiting to see what the end product is.

last night I was looking through old pictures and found some baby pics of my previous dogs. It was almost funny how much alike those non-related shelites look like Lars.

Oh, not coat, but speaking of "stages": Have you seen the "angel fish" stage? It's from when adult size is reached to about 2 years, when they look great from the side but have no chest yet, and when viewed front on "almost disappear".

I'll move this over to the fuzzy pictures section of our forum, since it really isn't about grooming.

Here's my Jackson as a puppy at 9 weeks, 4 months, 7 months and 10 months. His coat is already thicker than my previous Sheltie, but his litter mate, Franklin, is still fairly thin and whispy.

His coat progression looks quite a bit like Dickens's. He looks to be a big one, too; I wonder if size has any bearing on coat length, or rather, coat length relative to the entire body?

Jackson is on the larger side of breed standard, but still not overly large. Our previous blue merle was 35 lbs. and a big boy indeed. Jackson's coat seems to be fuller, although Winston was a very fluffy pup.
