Pup is now 4 months old now and she looks really long legged. Is this a stage they go through? I was wondering if she was going to be tall and thin. She is 12 inches high now and her legs are so loooong. Have you noticed how some shelties look tall and thin and others look short and more well rounded by the time they are adults? :smile2:

Yep it's a stage - their body grows at all different speeds, but most noticeably their legs seem to grow first! On sheltie forums we call it the 'coyote' phase.

Shelties don't really look tall and thin unless they've got no fur. When my female had her back end shaved for hip surgery she had the shape of a greyhound underneath - quite long legged (for a small sheltie) and a high tucked waist. But with fur she looks like a round ball of fluff.

Ahhh, yes. My favourite time of puppyhood. I openly laughed at Sparta on a daily basis when she was going through that. It was only made better by the fact that she had absolutely no coordination whatsoever, she'd literally trip over her own legs if she forgot to pay attention to walking. Her breeder even warned me about that phase - "they're the most gorgeous dogs in the world, but at four months... well."

Remember that shelties do most of their growing in the first six months, and around four they've mostly gotten their adult-length legs out, while still holding on to the puppy coat. My rule of thumb is that the height come in the first six months, then body and balance in the next six. But everyone is different, of course.

For comparison, here's pictures of Sparta at 2,5 months, 4 months (those back legs...), and finally starting to look Sheltieish at 9,5 months.

My Cubby went through the coyote phase in a huge and ugly way. It was horrifying and very embarrassing. I actually got a little depressed about it. He was a bout 4-5 months. He put back together nicely though and turned out very nicely proportioned with a lovely coat. Cubby, though, always was oversize even as a little tyke and still is a large boy standing at 18" at almost a year in age. Don't despair.

I think I have been totally blind (as in love)

I thought Minne always has been "beautiful" in all stages.

When I look at your pictures, I can see that she probably has not been so.

Dickens was all legs, a ridiculously short coat, a huge head and a rat tail. Two months later he looked like a real Sheltie, albeit an unusually big one.

Hi! Yes, this is normal! Sheltie traits also vary by region. I remember I had many sheltie friends on Instagram from Finland/Sweden and they are sooo fluffy from a very young age. I was jealous since mine barely had fur at 4 months lol! She is pretty short, so the legginess wasn't too obvious for her, but now that she's more fluffed out I definitely notice it more when I look at her old pictures. She is now 8 months.

Here she is now, more of a fluffball at 8 months :smile2:
