Yes, that is an infamous sheltie trait!

It can be very cute...but I'd recommend making sure you can put a stop to it, if you want. It can turn into nipping heels and that can be bad if there are little kids around.

By the way, I LOVE your sheltie's name! I'm a huge HP fan, and assume it came from there?

Yes it is really cute. But I agree. Diva has a lot of herding instinct. I didn't encourage it and she still at 22 months grabs my pant legs sometimes although she is not nipping my thighs and backside anymore a behavior that started at 6 months and she was still doing at about 9 months despite training.

I love when they herd. It is so cute, but yes, you have got to be able to stop it when you want him to.

Toffee did a little herding by putting his cold nose in the back of my knees.. gets me EVERY TIME, that little devil.. He still does it, and I love it because then I always know my cold-nosed shadow is close by, lol

Bailey used to run around me in a circle and nip my ankles as she ran by. I nipped it in the butt (pun intended ) when she was 3 months old. Sure it was cute, but it wouldn't have been so cute when she had all her adult teeth.

Fluffy doesn't herd or try to herd.

Smudge does. He snaps at your ankles, and his bitten my ankels more times than I care to tell about.

Sca got cured of biting but 'bumps' into me, that is allowed. Occasionally he will jump on my legs or swat at me and that gets corrected. He does herd his buddy Rascal the long haired Dashhound. I mean circle it, bark at it, nip at it; either it is cured or repeat.... I think it is in the Sheltie handbook

Just be careful. I was trying to ignore Ainsley's herding behavior one day when she was nipping at my heels. She managed to grab the back of my shoe and I took a nasty spill in the kitchen, managing to hit both my shoulder and my hip on the cupboard. Lots of nasty bruises, but fortunately, no broken bones.

I guess what I am saying is watch what kind of behavior you encourage. What might be cute in a puppy isn't necessarily as cute when they get bigger.
