Yuki is now 11 months and it hasn't been an easy journey. She was soooooo timid, lacked confidence and hyper-sensitive to noise. She was three months when I got her; not mistreated, just not socialised. And I can see how she could have ended up being a rescue dog if she had been in the wrong family. I feel like we both missed the puppy stage as she was fearful of everything and it took a long time before she was comfortable with her immediate surroundings. It was a month before she'd leave her crate and another four months before she would step outside. It almost seems like her world feels safer a couple of metres more each day. We were fortunate that she loves chasing the ball and bringing it back, that interaction is a real ice-breaker. She is now extremely confident inside (going through the rebellious stage) and have only just got to the stage where she will take treats outside. I'm hopeful that in a couple of months she will be comfortable enough to listen so I can train her outside. My main problem now is her barking and I'm sure it is associated with her temperament and hyper-reaction to noise. Any little noise she barks at; a sneeze, the blender, a bird, the sound of aluminium foil tearing. I've trained her with treats to adjust to some of the noises which she really reacts to, but there are so many and it is really annoying. And, I know this is silly, but she is not a tail wagger, so I find her really difficult to read. Are Shelties tail wagers??

Spirit sort of waves her tail when she is aroused, but she doesn't wag it in happiness the way some dogs do.

And it sounds like you are doing such an amazing job with her. Yuki hit the jackpot the day you brought her home :)

Koko will wag his tail when I'm baby talking and praising and petting him. Fillion is seldom to never in the tail wag dept. He is more likely to when he sees a friend off in the distance. Neither of my angels boys wagged either....

I am first-time owner - and really wondered why Minnie rarely wag her tail, although she will soon be three years and a confident and happy dog - she does it very rarely.

I've noticed that she makes a low wag when she is uncertain and will show that she is friendly when she example. meets a cat lying down. :smile2:

I think that Minnie is a "tail lifting" it for goes straight up when she are crazy pleased :biggrin2:

So happy to hear of your progress with Yuki. She is very blessed to have found a home with someone caring and patient. One of my shelties isn't a tail wagger either, yet she's my more happy-go-lucky confident dog.

Deska didn't wag his tail until I got Tully. Then he learnt to wag from her, he even copied her 'gay tail' (that's a tail curved over the back). It wasn't a confidence issue, he just never wagged. Even now he does little low wags, which are kind of cute. Whereas Tully, with her long bushy, fox tail does huge sweeping wags.

The only time Phoebe really wags her tail is when she is greeting someone. That is accompanied by reaching out her front paws in a slight wiggle.
