  • Hi Shaun,
    Thanks for asking about William,
sorry to take so long to read your message, I got myself in a car accident about a month ago. Got hurt but Everything is fine now,
William is still doing well, other than his drinking more than 7 cups of water a day he is acting his normal self. Thank goodness. The vet says he is not a candidate for Epakitin, or Tums.
We have decided to enjoy him for as long as we have with him and not put him through anymore invasive testing, just his 3 month urine test to see whats happening.
Hope this finds you and yours all well.

    Hi Shaun
I have been on the web, and copied the info. that I found re Epakitin, and will be taking to our Vet early next week, (as we have an hour drive) and will be going that direction to take my 4 for their monthly bath at the groomers, so will be able to get this info to the vet at that time.
I will ask her about TUMS too at the same time.
William looks and behaves like there is nothing wrong too. If it had'nt been for his annual check up we too would'nt have known anything was going on.
Please send us a picture of Zoe we would love to see her.
We too hope everything is well at your house -
and will let you know what our vet says about the supplement.

    Hi Sylvia!

You know, my vet mentioned that there was a new medicine out that helped with the phosphorus too, I'm not sure if it's what you are mentioning or not. She said the tums would do the same thing and to try it first because the new medicine was expensive. Every 6 months we have her levels checked to see how she is doing. Last time was after we started the tums and they are doing the trick. If Zoe wouldn't have been having her little accidents we would have nevere known that she was sick. She is the best dog ever. Such a princess! Oh, and the picture that I have up right now is Marlie - she's a brat! I will have to send you a picture with Zoe in it so you can see her cute face!

I hope that everyone is doing well at your house today!

    Hi Ontario Sheltie,
In answer to you about the Vet would not recommend a treatment that might ultimately put my guy into kidney failure, Your are probably quite right, however my confidence was somewhat dimmished when she said that she had never done this test before and was checking with an internist - so I am not sure what to think.

We are continuing to keep our guy as comfortable and happy and work through the difficulties that may occur.
    Thanks for your kindness

Sorry I didn't write sooner, I didn't see the message notification.

I'm so sorry that William has had so much stress due to the testing, I completely understand your decision to just keep him happy and comfortable.

Mcguiregirl is right, you should look at finding a dog food that will specifically give kidney support. My aunts cat went into kidney failure but lived for a number of years on 1/4 kidney function due to the kidney food she was eating.

I just want to mention though, I don't think your vet would recommend a treatment that might ultimately put your dog into kidney failure.

I hope that you, William and your family can work through this. Hugs and licks from Sadie and Me!

I know how difficult it is. Zoe is almost 7 and has Juv. Kidney disease. I have her on the K/D and tums to help her process her food. She drinks a ton of water ever day too. Poor girl has to sleep in her kennel at night and during the day while we are gone for easy clean up. Poor girl piddles or leaks while she is sleeping. I don't want to put her on incontinence meds though because it will speed up the kidney degeneration. The things we do for our babies. Big hugs to you and your family. Wags and licks from my girls!

Sylvia, the only thing that I can say that I might do is put him on Science Diet K/D formula. If it is a kidney issue this will help his kidneys function better and will extend his life. I'm sorry that they put him through all of that crap and didn't give you any better answers. I would have thought that a dog would be sedated right off the bat when they are trying to do the ultrasound. At least that's what my vet office does so I guess I assumed that all of the vets did that. I will keep all of your family and furbabies in my thoughts. Take care!
