AKC S.T.A.R. Program

My local AKC announced in the paper that they are accepting registration for their S.T.A.R. classes. It's only $60, but I was wondering what you do? How long does it usually last? They start at 6pm, but I have to be at work at 10pm. I live an hour away, so I wasn't sure if I was going to have time to make it back to work or not. I sent them an email, and I'm excitied about it. Maybe Smudge will get to meet some other shelties! :biggrin2:

The S.T.A.R. program is essentially a puppy version of the CGC test. They generally teach the same types of things as a puppy obedience class. It is a program to help start dogs out on the right path to being well behaved dogs, which in todays society with all the crazy dog laws, is a good thing.
If given the choice between the two, I'd rather take the S.T.A.R. class. You get a really cool medal from the AKC for completing the class. From what I've seen, there aren't any real differences between what is taught in the classes. My obedience trainer is a certified CGC tester, so consequently, that qualifies her for STAR testing as well.

The AKC people finally emailed me back. Smudge has a spot reserved. They're going to put a form on their website, and I have to mail that in with Smudge's shot records and the money. Please, Smudge, don't be an obedience school drop out! :uhoh:

Oooh - and they have a sheltie puppy on the front of the brochure too, so cute. I am afraid I am a sucker for anything with a sheltie on front (I recently brought an overpriced dog food container just cause it had a sheltie)

I would love to do the CGC course but we dont have anyone offering it in my state yet. I think its great you get recognition for it - and its an accredited program. Go little smudge.

My mom will do the same thing. She complains that there aren't enough products with shelties on the front. When she does find something with one on the front then she tries to get me to buy it. :uhoh: I think they should have more shelties on the outside of grooming products especially.

Good luck with your S.T.A.R class. I'm sure Smudge will be GREAT! These little guys pick up on things so quickly it still amazes me after nearly 2.5 years with my little guy.

The time you spend on his training will be well worth it.

There are really only a few things that worry me. One is that Smudge will become terrified and hide between my legs. Two is that there will be big dogs there (I'm sure there will be!). Three is that I am terribly anti-social. I never know what to say to people, and I don't want to make an idiot out of myself.

I am under the impression (and please, PLEASE let me be right!) that most people who go to these types of things take a little pride in themselves and their dogs. So hopefully all of the bigger dogs there won't be too evil (in other words snapping and growling). I have no idea how Smudge will react to other dogs, because his experiences at the vet has been kind of ify. I kind of tend to blame that on the over hyper poodle and the excited mini schnauzer. When your first experience is two bundles of barking happiness in your face (all at once, mind you) then I could kind of understand how he would feel overwhelmed.
