I've been putting off posting because once it's in print, it's real. Dixie was diagnosed with cancer on 9/12/2025. I actually took her to the vet because she was turning in circles and I was pretty sure that wasn't a good thing. I was able to get in that afternoon and when I put her in the car, I felt the lump which was not noticeable 2 weeks earlier. Vet confirmed and put her on meds for the suspected stroke that caused the circling. she was supposed to be on that for a month and then switch to a different drug for the cancer. we were given 15 days of pills and vet called a couple days before finishing those- said to finish that bottle, wait a week and start the other drug. that time frame turned out to be while I was out of town so we decided to put the new med off until I got back. she wasn't eating well so I wanted to put her back on the first med and see if that helped her. then the vet wanted to see her again so we went back yesterday. the vet ran bloodwork and said the kidney values were not good and wanted to keep her overnight and give her fluids, different meds, kidney food, etc. when the vet called this morning and said that there wasn't any improvement and that now it was suspected to be a heart issue instead of kidney issue. I had some things scheduled in the morning so vet said I could come any time in the afternoon and we could discuss things but there was a phone call before I could get there and I was told that Dixie had passed. I knew that with the cancer being so fast that we wouldn't have a whole lot more time but certainly wasn't ready for it to be today. She would have been 16 years old in 44 more days

Calliesmom so very sorry to hear about Dixie. There really are no words for this. Sometime hard to explain to people but loss of a furkid is just devastating to many of us.. The thing to remember is that Dixie has a good and love fill life and I am sure would never have chosen to be anywhere but where she was. Dixie was beautiful and I am sure she will be remembered well and with love-- Those of us who have shared this journey with our dogs share your sadness. Dixie was, but she will always be Dixie.

Oh Denice I’m so sorry….what a hard loss, and so suddenly. It never matters how old they are or how sick, it’s never enough time especially for the special ones like Dixie. Sending you hugs and comfort.

I am so sorry to hear this Denice! What a wonderful girl Dixie was and what a wonderful life she had…you gave her the best life any Sheltie could ever want but still so hard to lose them suddenly like this. I’m so sorry for your loss…

I'm so sad for you, and I know exactly what you mean by not posting cuz it makes it real. She was a beautiful girl and you had so many wonderful years together. I hope that gives you some comfort.

Oh NO!!! I was gone and offline last week - OMG Denice - so many of your Shelties have been hit with cancer. I'm sorry beyond words that she passed suddenly and without you being there to hold her. Damn. It's just never enough time no matter how old they get. She was such a lovely lady, I still remember the Thanksgiving litter with Cran and Dixie joining you later. She was blessed with a long healthy life in a loving home, I hope that fact comforts you in the days to come. :hugs
