Baby Gate -Fun while it lasted

Well, it finally happened. We've been using a baby gate to keep the girls in areas where we wanted them. Week before last, I was sick. I came home early and our son had the dogs in his room with him- so he could play video games and watch the girls who WILL get into trouble whenever possible. I got home and went into my room. Clara saw me and went crazy! She wound up jumping the gate. Now, Clara is the small one. Maybe 13 inches? So, since she can jump it, I know that Tara at 16 inches can. Hopefully no one will tell Tara though... sigh...

If the gates get any taller, I won't be able to jump over it.

get the walk-through door baby gate:yes:

That's a thought. But really, as long as she's in the same room I'm in, she is fine with it. No desire to leap as long as she's with me. Which amuses me, because once she's in the room with me, she could care less about being petted, or cuddling, or even allowing me to see her highness. Annabelle (her mom) is the snuggler.

You might be surprised. The taller dog may not even venture to try to jump. I have my Jasper who is right at 15" or so. He is 3-1/2 .He will not jump onto or over anything, but he can and does fly playing with his tether ball.
Blake is just 14-1/4 inches and is my leaper and has rubber bands for legs. But he has never has jumped over a baby gate.
So you might be surprised at what they consider fair game.

Bacca jumped over a couch once....first and only time....he went skidding into a coffee table and into another couch. He's never tried that stunt again. He was only about a year old at the time. And the couch was easily 3.5 feet high.

You can get tall gates....Carlson makes them. But if your dog is truly a jumper, they might still find their way over. It DOES require enough "runway" to do it however. So if you can shorten your runway, your gates may still survive! :wink2:

Birch can jump 36 inches straight up if he wants. He could easily spike jump a tall baby gate. That is why I use 2 in the door way.

we thought a baby gate would work to keep our puppy (now 14 weeks old at 13 inches) in but he climbs it and up and over he goes. Has done this since he was 8 weeks old (at 10 inches) gotta love shelties! After I posted about it on facebook, the breeder told me that his mother did that too.. and escapes crates... can't wait to see if he gets that habit.. so far not. :fl

OH Tara can definitely jump it. But She's a good girl. She isn't supposed to go where the gates are, so she just doesn't. Clara is a stubborn girl. (gonna stop short of saying she's a bad girl, just adventurous.). Clara climbed out of the whelping area several times. I kept finding this little tiny 4 week old puppy heading down the hallway. I put up a (I forgot what it's called- outside playpen thingy) I just would prefer them to not figure it out, because I don't want them getting into the litter boxes which are currently behind the gates. And since two if the cats are bigger than Clara, a cat door won't work either.
