Dams Sheltie Teeth!

So Pico's rear molar's have some hard plaque.
I've been brushing his teeth and it looks like it has gotten worse!

I ordered one of those sonic dental tools from amazon.
the reviews and pictures are pretty amazing.
it will be an adventure, that's for sure, as I need to wrap up Pico in a towel to really brush his back teeth.
he is getting better, but he is a cute little Pico burrito

Oh man, good luck with that! I have a hand scaler that I've used to pry off the tartar and they hate that too. Yep Shelties often have this issue unfortunately!!!

the sonic thing is more about the noise than the scraping.
But it could be slow going

funny thing is, before the burrito, Pico would try and climb into my arms while I was scrubbing his teeth

If it helps, I've started using Oxydent in their water every day. After three dentals and numerous extractions in recent months I needed to find something that works. This seems to be helping, a lot. My vet just looked at Misty's teeth and said something I've never heard: "Gorgeous!" No brushing and it helps with their breath too!

Once upon a time I tried a kid’s electric toothbrush on Piper….no way!!!
He absolutely refused to let me near him with it (yup…the noise). And of course now when I tried to use the electric trimmer on his bit of fur underneath his jaw he still remembers the noise and won’t let me touch him with it!
I’m sure over time though he’d allow it.

Pico isn't a fan of the electric toothbrush either! Gavin spoiled me LOL
I use the virbac treats but am willing to try anything and everything.
I just got him the woof bite n brush....he loves the thing but Im not sure it helps.

I have tried to brush sheltie teeth and kudos to you all that can and do. All our shelties have had horrible teeth- tartar heaven. We are currently using the Dental chews from Science diet and they seem to do a pretty good job but they do leave stuff in the unused area.. They do not like having their teeth messed with at all.. above my pay grade.

I have found that using kelp powder has helped immensely in keeping the dogs teeth relatively free from tartar. Prior to Piper’s jaw issues his teeth still didn’t need a cleaning and Finnie at 7 his teeth are still great (and his breath isn’t bad) and Blueberry’s teeth are good at 4. Finnie and Blueberry do still get a chicken foot every day as well. If you’re using kelp powder make sure your dog food doesn’t have any added to it.
