    Yikes. Just FYI for everyone.

The Food and Drug Administration is alerting pet owners about high levels of aflatoxin in some pet foods after 28 dogs reportedly died and eight others were sickened.
The food containing the toxin has been identified as certain Sportmix products manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods. The products were voluntarily recalled by the company on Wednesday.

It made the National news, good to see that. Also got an alert from the Dog Food Advisor.

Me too... it was even posted to LinkedIn.
I hope there is a class action lawsuit! Where is their quality control!
I fear there were more but not reported...

I heard that over 100 dogs have died from this so far.
I watched a Facebook video today with Karen Becker and Rodney Habib discussing different nut butters (since this recall I’ve eliminated peanut butter for the dogs). The main thing they said regarding aflatoxin and peanuts is always buy human grade peanut butter...higher standards and just for health reasons don’t buy pb that has hydrogenated fats in them. Jif and others add hydrogenated oils and other ingredients to make peanut butter creamy and fridge stable. Best peanut butter is only 1 ingredient...peanuts. Oh and check the label to avoid xylitol of course!

Its pathetic to have to stand in the food isle and keep reading ingredients for fear of the contents.
Its worth the time for the sake of our beloved dogs.

We only use natural nut butters; just the nut and a little salt. It's all hubby and I eat and all we give Oberon, in very limited amounts occasionally. When I cook/bake with it I let him lick the spoon.

I bought almond butter (all natural) and I must say I don’t like it at all! I actually bought it for the dogs and made them a batch of flour free cookies. Ingredients were almond butter, an egg and sugar. Obviously I’m not adding sugar so just the two ingredients. Baked up about 24 cookies each one roughly 2” across. Then I figured out the calories per cookie....84 in one cookie!!! Both dogs are on a weight loss program lol so no way am I even giving them a taste! Perhaps I could feed them to the birds?:ROFLMAO:

Same - it's a texture thing. The taste itself isn't bad, but the grainy, sticky texture is unappealing and I am a super chunky peanut butter gal.
