So Che and I got ourselves organic turkey, beef and chicken. Mommy made turkey patties with potatoes, carrots, rolled multigrain oats, green beans, blueberries, cranberries, flaxseed, organic eggs and garlic... potatoes and oats were precooked but everything else is raw... Che approved.

any favorite recipes to share for those who cook food for their dogs?

there are mixed reports on the use of garlic. Onion has specific component in it that COULD be highly toxic to dogs, garlic has tiniest amount of that component so while onion and garlic are of same family they are not the same... there is no scientific evidence that garlic ever was a culprit of serious problem with dog's health and multiple anecdotal evidence of garlic being used for general health well being, flea and tick prevention... BTW wolfs in the wild are known to eat wild garlic...
I go on the idea that common sense tells me- garlic has been known as excellent antiviral, antibacterial, improving immune system natural agent. If my dog likes it and tolerates it- no throwing up, diarrhea, any other changes etc... I give him small amount of it on daily basis.
Dogs are used to eat leftovers of human food for thousands of years and no doubt garlic is present in many dishes, it is only recent 50-60 years when whole branch of dry kibble food developed...
My motto- much research and read on " knowledge" is out there because of someone making profit on it... use your common sense, do your own research and make informed decisions....

Just thought I should put this info out there.:smile2:
Onions have been shown to constitently cause toxicity in animals when they ingest more than 0.5% of their body weight in onions on one time. So in a 20lb dog that is more than 1.6oz. Cats are much more sensitive to onions(less than 5g/kg) than dogs and a very small amount can cause problems.

Garlic is in the same family of plant. We always considered garlic safe at small amounts and toxic in large amounts. When that threashhold is met we don't know.
These are 2 articles I could find on short notice.

Yummo - I would eat that!

My cooking isnt so fancy, and I often cook them things that I can eat - like patties with vegies and oats, spag bog, stews and if they are really lucky - lambs fry. I dont have onion in the house or use products with onion flavouring but do often sprinkle a little garlic in their food. Mine particularly love stews - I just use tomato paste and water as the sauce. My recipes are really simple - like mince cooked in tomato paste and rosemary to make a stew and then mashed pumpkin stirred through (well it looks nice to me, dont know if the dogs like it). Or if I give them something with rice I mix in an egg yolk while the rice is still hot so it cooks the yolk - they love their egg rice mixed with mince.

Now if you have some 5min recipes I would love to hear them.

Just a little FYI- and no, definitely NOT a recommendation.:smile2:

On some breed boards whenver anyone mentions flea control half a dozen people jump in with 'Don't use those poisons, use Bug Off!' After all, it's 'holistic', which apparently is a synonym for 'good'. :wink2:

If you can give dogs enough garlic to raise the blood levels to the point where it is excreted on the skin and repels fleas, a little seasoning in the food is fine.

Justicemom, thank you for posting those links, it is great source, I often get denied access to scientific magazines on line and not computer savvy to find ways around it...
so no feeding Sparky with 1 whole large head of garlic everyday... here goes Bug off too.. while I love garlic and think adding it in small amount to pup's food is beneficial .... I would probably be sick myself if ate that much garlic every day...
regarding fleas I am not very concerned, we have 2 cats who are outdoors/ indoors as they wish animals and so far the only time when flea issue arise is early fall when fleas are starting to look for warmer homes.... cats get a dose of treatment at that time and we good for entire year...
Caro, thank you for compliment, same as you I am easy cook, the difficult part is to get all ingredients in the house, after that it is mix and package deal....problem is I do not eat meat so pup has to have special trip to the store... LOL
there is nice recipe of the food for doggies on Central IL rescue site, it is giving largish proportions but one could always freeze daily portions.... I like that they use kelp... I bet it very beneficial for thyroid sensitive dogs as Shelties, there is also link where to order those supplements...
Pup and I still have ground organic beef to experiment with...

I often make a basic recipe for the kids: cook up some quick-cook barley, let it cool, and mix with a pound or so of some cooked ground meat. Add in a small can (or frozen and thawed) carrots and string beans. Add in some chicken or beef broth and a two chopped hard-boiled eggs.

I add this to kibble a few tablespoons at a time the day I make it, and freeze the rest "flat" in freezer bags. When I'm ready to feed, I take out the freezer bag and "break" off a chunk to thaw. The bag then goes back in the freezer.

If I have leftovers--maybe some roasted chicken, beef, flounder or salmon (whatever)-- I chop that up and add it to the daily mix. Occasionally, I'll add pumpkin, pears, banana or apples. I hate wasting food, so whenever I can, I try to incorporate leftovers in the diet.

That said, they only get dry kibble in the morning. This "stew" I feed at night.

And now...re-reading this, I think I've become a little insane!

Ummm! I would probably eat this....without the kibble!

I think my boys eat better than I do! I'm usually happy with a sandwich.
