about the size of a half dollar. I found a large bit of matted fur when grooming this morning on his neck just under his collar, and once I cleaned it up enough to see what I though was an open wound, to the vet we went. They shaved him and cleaned him up, and the vet told me it looks like a mass popped. So we wait for it to heal up, pump Gavin full of antibiotics, and then we get it biopsied via needle aspirate I guess.

I groom him at least every 2 weeks, so I find it hard to believe I would have missed something this big....

    poor guy...I'm scared for him

Cindy I hope this proves to be nothing serious once you can get it biopsied. Some of these masses can grow super fast but that doesn't mean they are malignant.

That is what I was thinking too!
Sending good thoughts for a positive diagnosis! Hugs to your sweet boy! With an added BIG SMOOCH on his snout!

    definitely not an abcess.
looks like a mast cell tumor for sure....and its about an inch in diameter.
It looks like it was hiding under his collar, which is how I missed it.
I keep it on when I groom him :(

in a few weeks I will have to decide on surgery....
should I be scared of a 15 year old dog going under?

Cindy I hope Gavin’s growth is nothing. Checkers had something like this a few years ago between her neck and shoulder. With her history of mast and spindle cell growths I was a nervous wreck. It turned out to be a form of cyst that I can’t recall the specific name of. I hope Gavin’s is the same.

Im sure they can't get a good biospy right now because the infection would make IDing it hard. But the next few weeks are gonna be tough. The vets all loved Gavin...kept telling me how sweet he is. he doesn't deserve this, poor guy. He's only got a year left anyway most likely (or 2 tops), and I wanted it to be a happy and pain free one.

I’m so sorry your having to go through this with Gavin now Cindy! Praying that it’s as Ann mentioned!
Fingers crossed and I’ll keep you two in my thoughts and prayers.
