When does a Sheltie stop "growing"?

I took my dog to doggie camp at Petsmart today and there was another lil' Sheltie there! I wound up talking to them for a bit and they said their little girl was 8 months old (and had a very bushy coat) and I said that Pogo was about 5 1/2 months old. I swear they were the same size. I sorta felt bad for my lil' guy because you can tell a difference between a dog from a good breeder and one from a BYB (at least in this case). But I love him regardless! :smile2:

BTW, if I hear one more person call my dog a "mini Collie" I think I'm going to have to hurt them.:dead:

From what I’ve read, some Shelties stop growing by 6 to 8 months and yet others may continue to grow until they are as much as a 1-1/2 years old. And females tend to stop growing sooner than males.:confused2: Hopefully someone else will have a more concise answer for you. At any rate, you love your boy and you’ll continue to love him whether he is a smallish or a larger Sheltie when full grown. And when folks call Pogo a “mini collie” just smile and walk on. It’s amazing how many humans don’t get that a Shetland Sheepdog is a breed unto itself. I gave up trying to educate people on this subject because one time too many after I’ve explained the difference, I get a glazed look and I figure he or she isn’t listening to me anyway!!:rolleyes2:

Pogo is your pupper and regarless of how big he gets you'll still love him. They all tend to grow so differently. When I had my first sheltie she was of the larger ,shelties. We use to call her a mini tank. She was 18 inches maybe taller I can't remember. but she weighed in at 40 pounds.:eek2: Some would call her a Weight watcher. Well all I know is she was healthy, fast, and my baby. That was right prior to her Thyroid condition. Then she was placed on the meds and it seems to have been downward spiral from there.

most females are done growing by 8 months and males 10-12 months it depends on the lines some lines stop growing early some later.
that drives me nuts too! (the mini collie comment) mine have been called mini collies. belle who is 14 1/2 inches was called a mini sheltie. I was also tols they must be really smart because they have full white collars, and them are smater than the ones that dont have the full collar. :confused2:

LOL, you have got to be kidding! Someone actually said that to you? Gosh, Marlie must be downright stupid then compared to Zoe and Rasha! I just don't understand what some people think when they open their mouths! Very funny!!! Oh, by the way, I get tired of hearing that same line, mini collies, phhhhh!

I just smile and say, "Actually, she's a Shetland Sheepdog. There really aren't any mini-Collies, although they do remind people of Collies." Folks have always been appreciative for the info, and it's a short reply. We have to remember that folks ask or comment because our babies are so beautiful that they draw attention. I think when we honor the questioner, we honor the breed.

Annie Laurie is from a BYB, too. When I was looking up Layla's ancestors on the Pedigree website, I noticed how much Annle resembles the original foundation Shelties from the early teens and twenties. So now I just tell people, "She's a 'classic' Sheltie." :wink2:

Sadie stopped growing between 6-7 months old.

I get the mini collie comment once in a while, most people just aren't sure what she is. I had to stop myself from laughing, on the weekend someone got really excited when they say Sadie and said 'Oh look! What a beautiful border collie!' Don't know where that one came from, Sadie is a sable!

I have tried that. I actualy had a man that was in hid 80's argue with me, and tell me he knows what shetland sheepdogs are, and you have a mini collie not a sheltie :rolleyes2: whatever, I wasn't going to waste my time arguing with an old guy!
