My 13 year old Sheltie has elevated liver enzymes. He is on Denamarin, Marin plus, amoxicillin, Ursodiol and Metronizole. Any help please?

That sounds like a lot of medication for elevated liver enzymes. Does he have other medical conditions? The antibiotic suggests infection and metronidazole is used for diarrhea. I'm not a vet, but it would seem that some of these could compromise his liver.

I really recommend having your Sheltie's gallbladder scanned. Elevated liver enzymes can be sign of gallbladder mucoceles (GBM), which Shelties are predisposed to. You are unlikely to tell if the gallbladder is a problem without a scan - unless it bursts.

This has very recently come up in discussion. Here is the thread http://sheltieforums.com/threads/sheltie-health-alert.25957/ which references this article http://americanshetlandsheepdogassociation.org/gallbladder-mucolceles-2/ which recommends scans for older Shelties. I also found this article explaining GBM useful http://veterinarymedicine.dvm360.com/update-gallbladder-mucoceles-dogs?id=&pageID=1&sk=&date=

I suggest printing off the ASSA statement and taking it to your vet (that's what I did).

I was going to say the same thing as Caro. Elevated liver enzymes were the first sign of gallbladder mucocele in Hollie. Originally our vet thought it was b/c of being on Metacam. But we learned it was from her gallbladder.

Please get him to the vet and insist on having his gallbladder checked.

My 7yr old Sheltie had same symptoms 3 yrs ago, had ultrasound done on gallbladder, he had GBM for 3 yrs we treated medically with Ursidiol, metronidazole, Denamarin(very important) but expensive. Now 3 yrs later October 10/10/2023 he had his gallbladder removed.he did well, we are 4 weeks in and he has healed well. He does still get some indigestion from time to time. Continuing with Denamarin for liver support. But no Ursidiol. Please, it’s very important to make sure the surgeon that removes the gallbladder is BOARD CERTIFIED!!! Very! Very! Important
