I started feeding this food over a year ago. It was new to the market and it impressed me because it was human grade, slow cooked, and the ingredients looked good. My vet checked it out and said it was a good food. River loves it, will even eat it as a treat. It smells like real food when you open the bag. The other day I decided to switch things up and go back to Fromm for a bit for the sake of a rotational diet. When I opened the bag I immediately noticed it smelled “manufactured.” I know it’s a good food, and many of you feed it. River doesn’t like it anymore…he spit the pieces out. This was enough to validate my gut feeling that The Honest Kitchen was a better food. I took the bag back, and got my Honest Kitchen. The only problems I’ve had with it is sometimes some of the clusters are a bit browner (probably overcooked) and some bags have a lot of “crumbs” on the bottom. Anyway I thought I would pass along my experience since we are always looking for the best for our dogs.

I used to feed Fromm for years and was happy with it until I got a couple of bags that smelled off. Then started the quest for the best food and after a couple of years of trying everything from frozen raw to all of the premium dry foods, I settled on The Honest Kitchen. I was happy when they came out with the kibble - so much easier than mixing the dehydrated. I fed this for a little over a year, but like you, I noticed that some pieces seemed over cooked and at times there was alot of powder/crumbs in the bottom of the bag. I also felt that the protein level is a little too low. I recently have been feeding Acana Wholesome Grains and my pups seem to really like it and it agrees with them. It also has no peas/legumes, potatoes, soy, corn, wheat or byproducts.

Interesting, we recently switched back to kibble from a homemade hi-veg diet and settled on HK as well.
One primary reason was the no peas, legumes, etc.
Funny thing is, 1.5-2 cups a day for the initial small bag testing because we were used to the added bulk from the veg diet, and a month later happened to weight him at the dog store and he's 51#!
He had been a little O/W prior at ~44#, but he is a large boy.
We cut it since to 1 cup a day, and the past week since and he's still not dropped any weight......
Part of it is being winter, him being 11, and really, I'm lazy.
I'm going back to a part veg diet for bulk, and see if a bit more exercise helps before dropping below 1 cup/day.

I feed the Honest Kitchen Small Breed clusters in the mornings to four of my six, each around 20 pounds. (They get fresh or freeze-dried at night.) As a comparison, three of them get 1/4 cup and Misty, who is larger at 23 pounds, gets 1/3 cup. You can probably safely cut your boy down to 3/4 cup with added veggies. Keep in mind that weight loss seems to take FOREVER, at least in all of mine. I weigh once a week and rarely see a change in less than a month. Hope this helps.

Teddy has been kept at 26 to 29 lbs using 1/3rd cup dry food twice a day with green beans and bananas for treats. My Vet likes him at 26 lbs. He is 17.5 inches at the shoulder

I managed to get Piper down to 20 pounds from roughly 23 pounds but it took over a year! And this was from very little walking because of my arm. He could maybe lose another pound but he’s pretty good at 20 as I can easily feel his ribs and backbone. Your right about it taking a long time to lose and very easy to gain!

Ann, You jinxed me (LOL) You mentioned weighing your pups. So I took Mr Chunky Monkey and put him on his scale and he's gained 1 pound since I last did it :( .It's my fault, it's to hard not to give that face treats just because. :)

I give my dogs celery or cucumbers or zucchini as treats, that way they get what they want (food) and I don’t worry about them gaining weight! Celery is also very good for dogs and a great source of fibre and vitamins and minerals. A win win.
