How do I edit or delete a post, or change the title of a thread?

1. Find the post you wish to edit. Make sure you're logged in.

2. Look for the edit button in the bottom right-hand corner of the post. It will only appear on your own posts, and looks like this:
edit.gif

3. Click the icon. This will take you to an edit-able version of your post. Make your changes, and then click the "save" button to resubmit the post. Be aware that you only have 24 hours to edit a post. After that, it is final.

4. If your post is the first one in a thread, you won't be able to delete it. (And no, the moderators will not delete entire threads for you either -- please don't ask us to.) The first post in the rules say to be responsible for what you say.

If you're trying to change the title of a thread you started, you can do so by editing the first post in that thread. Once you're in the edit window, click the "go advanced" button, and that will allow you to change the title.

I've tried to delete a post before but don't see how it can be done. I can get into the edit screen but don't see anything there that will delete it. If I simply delete all of the text and leave the message area blank I get a message that there must be at least 10 characters of text and it won't let me save that change. Am I missing something that allows delete? My post wasn't the first in a thread either. Please let me know.

Shel-t-mom,

Thank you for bringing this discrepancy in the rules to my attention.

At one point we had a member who became dissatisfied with the tone & path of certain conversations here on the forums. As a result, they went back and deleted every post they ever made. They tried to erase their participation in the site completely. This person had a lot of good advice & information that was lost as a result. The remaining threads also became disjointed & confusing since part of the conversations was then missing.

If I allow members to delete their posts & they started the thread, all of the posts in it are also deleted. Even worse, they can then go back into the forum history and delete all of their threads if they want.

As a result, I decided to remove users ability to modify or delete their posts, but I forgot to update the language in the rules.

As it stands now, users have 24 hours to modify their posts before it becomes locked.

Thanks for clearing that up, Kelly,
I'm assuming that's 24 hours to edit a post, not completely delete it. Is that correct?
