Barkley doesn't lift his leg and he was neutered at 5 months old. He doesn't squat either though. He just plants his hind legs spread a bit in what we call The Stance and goes. He's always done that.

That's Beckers -- he does the "I have a wide stance" thing.

JUstice didn't raise his leg until he was 3. He is intact and still doesn't lift his leg more than half the time. He does the stance too. He wouldn't dream of going in a house. I think like someone said they don't like to get pee on themselves and I think that's true.

I know of a sheltie that was hiking his leg by 4 months. He pee on his feet and skirt all the time. Yuk. Every other sheltie I've known has been so clean.

I had to ask Brian how old Earnhardt was before he started lifting his leg to pee,and he told me Earnhardt was close to a year old.

At the time,we were walking Earnhardt many times a day,as we had no fenced yard. Brian was more excited that Earnhardt I think the first time..as Brian was beginning to wonder if he ever would raise his leg. And the first time he did..heavens me, Brian came in the house and said.."well our puppy is finally growing up"

I had a Drinkwell Fountain for my old cat, who was in renal failure. She absolutely loved it and I know that she drank more water as a result. I've kept it... maybe I should get it out for the dogs. Snap is a big water splasher, though: he will dig his front paws into a water bowl and splash it dry !!!

Time for true confessions. Snap got a treadmill as an early Christmas present. I guess I'll have to use it, too, so that we get our money's worth out of it.... otherwise he may never get a present again !!!

Good thing he loves the treadmill. (He worked at 5% incline this morning: 3 min warmup, 12 mins of workout, and 3 mins of cooldown).

I LOVE shelties on a treadmill! :biggrin2: I've watched YouTube vidoes, and it's so sweet that it will give you a tooth ache.

Katherine, I wish someone would come along and put me on the treadmill daily at a 5% incline, 3 min warmup, 12 min workout, and a 3 min cooldown. Then they could plop me down on the couch for an afternoon nap.

Ohhh the life of a well cared for dog!

    Chris-

They taught him at the rehab center. I had not realized that they were going to do so, however, and had gone to YouTube to look for training videos. Sure enough, there are a lot of them ! I liked Karen Pryor's clicker training method :

Snap is harnessed and I straddle him, with a traffic lead clipped to his harness. He's pretty secure in what he's doing.... although the other evening I hit the 3 mph button (instead of the 2 mph one) by mistake. I had visions of him shooting of the back of the treadmill !
