Itchy Puppy

So Pico has been overall scratching himself that past few days (3-4 days I am guessing).
It's not the same place so no hot spots. no fleas. just weird.
hair tufts everywhere because he is itching himself enough to create furballs that come off.

This morning I was thinking on it....I changed his food last week sometime to Lamb and Barley (the week before was the slow titrating). Now I thought lamb was supposed to be pretty non allergenic food choice but what do I know. So back to chicken and fish I suppose. I was trying to rotate them but it will be just an alternate now I guess unless I try beef. None are grain free, btw.

Sigh.....it isn't constant but def enough that I am concerned. Poor guy is just itchy. new (old) food shows up in a few days. if everything goes back to normal I will have my answer.

Hard to say the exact what but I would blame food 100%. When Sca was alive we were on the way to flyball racing and I realized I forgot the guys food. So I stopped and got a bag of a reputable brand. Sca the Iron belly was not even phased. Spitfire broke out in hives. Poor guy had to get prednisone. Back to normal food and zero problems since then.

yeah...lamb and barley is the new one. we've done chicken and fish without issue. I think I even swapped in a chicken grain free one time. It all wellness complete.

the past 2-3 days he has been rubbing up against furniture a lot, too.

I'm hoping he don't stop snuggling now. the past week or so he has been jumping on the couch and snuggling next to me in the evenings. I'll miss it

It's always a guessing game with skin stuff. I agree with Sheep, food is most likely the culprit, especially given the timing. At the moment, I have five dogs on five different foods, all for different health needs. Feeding time is like a military maneuver. I hope the itching stops when you get off the lamb, otherwise I'd see the vet.

I would also guess food since it is whole body itching and not external exposure. Our scratch more during shedding season and one constantly scratches his mug but we can find no cause for that..everything looks good in his mouth and teeth??? Benadryl is a good go to for overall histamine reactions. Not sure what the max dose should be but that might be worth a try for a day to get things back to normal-- good luck Pico, you have important stuff to do and people to meet and adventures, so get on with it!!!

So this morning I spent an hour reclaiming the chicken kibble from the large mixed container (It was maybe 15%). It is a little bit smaller, and darker in color than the lamb kibble. I don't know if we will use it once the new kibble arrives today, but it has to be better than before (and Pico was hungry). I will try and gift the lamb kibble locally.

Benadryl is ~1mg/lb of doggie every 8 hours. So the 25 mg tablet is fine for Pico.
But he vomited last night (well, 2:30 AM). I gave him his second dose at 9PM so I doubt it was that. he is still scratching today, but maybe a little less? hard to tell. it can take a while for the itching to go away apparently.

Until you get your new food,Have you thought about giving him an Oatmeal bath to help relieve his itching? Might help depending how much he is scratching. Hope your food comes quickly.

that's a good idea...maybe after the beach tomorrow?
food should be here by 10PM, but he has plenty of the chicken that I reclaimed from the mix.

He isn't scratching THAT much, and it isn't all the same place. Some neck, some chest, some groin, etc. But all the tufts of fur!!! I guess when he scratches he pulls out the loose fur and it ends up as a tumbleweed :)

The only other thing that is new is I let him out in my teeney backyard this past week or so. It's pretty much all dirt and weeds. There isn't anything unique that he has access to except for the half dead (ok...3/4 dead) red flower bush that he mostly ignores (no idea what it is...thought it was chrysanthemum but its not according to google images). I'll fence it off next time I let him out
