I posted on the other thread that a friend of mine is the flyball instructor at our club. She is always trying to get more people to give it a shot, so we agreed!

I really know nothing about the sport (I mean, I've seen it before). I know nothing about the training. Our friend gave us a hit board (just a flat board that a ball can be velcroed to). We have been just getting Lexi to jump on it and turn (it's at a low angle) and also having her go get a ball off of it.

It's just something for us to work on in the house (great for when it's rainy or dark out), and Lexi enjoys it and it tires her out.

Here's a short video of her first couple tries: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFEh7gkflKE

She does good but try the ball on the right side or center. Lexi looks like she turns right and when you put the ball on the left it messes with her turn (watch the video and I think you'll see what I mean)

She is doing great. Definitely switch sides of the box for ball placement. My team puts the ball in the middle with velcro until the dog's preference is clear. Duncan changed sides a couple months into it!

So you can pick the side the ball goes on? I was thinking they had to do both. She definitely does better with it on the right. (There is no velcro in the middle).

It all depends on the box your team has. Sca's team has a three ball box. The center hole does small balls for the little dogs then a regular size one on right/left. Sca is a left turn for sure but can do right if forced. Lexi did right even when cramped so it is real obvious for her.

Okay so just to be clear...you put the ball on the side to which the dog turns. Is that right?

Think of it this way you want the dog grabbing the ball on the way back. So in Lexi case she seems to naturally approach on your left as you face the board this leaves more room on the right side. Thus she can hit the board (and in a real box trigger it) then grab it as she is banking and scoot on back. In that case she will be parallel to the box with her nose to the right at trigger so it is natural. If the ball is on the left she would need to either go straight on (slower and harder on the dog) or pick the ball up rather than catch it.

If you watch your video in some she is just arcing across really nice and snatching the ball, in a couple though she the ball is on the right and she has to go up and do a 180 slower and as I say harder on her if it is a real box.
