Massachusetts Bans Debarking

Wow!! There is MUCH controversy over debarking a dog. I'll be curious what the others here have to say about this.

What do you think Randi?

I thought New Jersey already did it.

They tried that here in Maryland. It didn't work. They used the "vicious attack dogs being silenced" tactic and Baltimore City came down and said "that's a bunch of crap, and we want our neighbors to have all options open to them." That was the end of that.

But again, back to the emotion. This law was not voted on based on any science or reason or logic, just emotion. Oh! How mean! We'd rather you use a shock collar or beat your dog. But, please, rip out their sexual organs as early as possible.

"To take the voice of an animal would be the equivalent of taking a person's voice or a person's ability to communicate," Brian Adams, spokesman for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA)

See, this is exactly the kind of imbecilic rhetoric gets the lay people going. It's a DOG, not a HUMAN! My dogs certainly don't need to bark to communicate. My alpha bitch gets the dogs in line without a sound. You can watch her do it. Argh.

Unfortunately, time and again, the people who are writing these articles condemning the practice don't seem to have ever actually met a debarked dog, much less seen that they are, on the whole, as well-adjusted and capable of expressing themselves as any other. "Debarking" sounds awful on paper (and it's easy to vote to ban, if you're a legislator, but if they'd take a moment to actually learn about the procedure and the life of a debarked (more accurately, bark-softened) dog, they might see that it's not all that bad. Our dogs still bark - they bark at us, the UPS truck, and other dogs. They can hear themselves and each other, but the whole neighborhood can't.

Besides, I am quite sure that the folks who voted for this bill went home afterward and sat down to nice dinners of animals that had actually been killed to suit human whims and desires, and didn't feel much guilt about it. We kill thousands and thousands of animals every day in this country because it's convenient and pleasurable to us, but a minimally-invasive procedure that allows a dog to continue living a fulfilled and happy life is now banned? Seems hypocritical to me.

I have no experience with debarking and have not done any research on it, so my opinion is not valid.

I just saw the article in the paper this morning and thought it was interesting and might make a good discussion here.

Its ridiculous!!!!! We do it for our neighbors so they dont complain. I have one thats bark softened...let me tell you she can still bark, I can still hear her quite well the difference is her bark doesnt carry thoughout the neighborhood. I tried everything to stop her from barking this was a last resort for her to keep her quiet so the neighbors dont complain.
My vet I use for de-barking in in MA...Guess I'll have to go to CT now...But I do feel bad for the breeders in MA. They are not allowed to own a dog that is de-barked without being fined and have to do community service and counseling...unless they can prove it was done prior to the new law being signed in. Even if they acquire a new dog that has been done. So lets say they buy a show prospect from a breeder in another state who had their dog done at 6 months they can be fined....its a sad day for the USA....they are taking away more and more and more but yet allow the big time puppy millers in other states to continue to pump out dogs for pet stores. They are pushing out legitimate breeders who keep a smaller amount of dogs...They are making it impossible for hobby breeders to continue. So people better start getting used to the ugly looking non-standard full of health issues puppy mill dog because pretty soon Hobby breeders who produce to the standard will not be able to breed and have litters anymore...afterall apparently we are the problem here:rolleyes2:

I think one of the dogs at the southern sheltie party was debarked (or had a cold :confused2:) All the dogs got along, all the dogs got petted, all the dogs had a blast. I have ZERO intention of debarking Sca but there is cases that I could see it (his mom is debarked)

One of the shelties at the Northeast meet up was debarked. He could clearly still bark, but sounded like he just smoked 10 packs of cigarettes. He look perfectly happy and healthy to me.

and furthermore how big of a problem is de-barking in New England?!?!?! seriously I've only heard a few de-barked dogs (who all happen to be shelties:lol:), none ever in my city...as there is a dog park down by our beach...I know more de-clawed cats than de-barked dogs....Its a absurb law passed by un-informed individuals!!!
