Missing Sheltie in PA

Hello everyone, I am looking for help. I have a rescue sheltie, Foxie, who went missing on Nov 7th in Bucks County, PA. After posting over 50 large signs and 100's of flyers I got my first sighting today from a local police officer! Sounds easy but the area where she was sighted was surrounded with woods, a park, a small corporate area, and a housing development. The officer tried to follow her but a car came by and she ran off. Any suggestions where to place the food, how to local her, what to use for bait? It is getting pretty cold here and a dog detective said it will be hard for her to smell the food in this weather. I am really praying for a Christmas miracle. Foxie deserves a nice warm home for the holidays. Foxie is microchipped and should still have her collar on with her ID. She is a sable about 12 pound, very small which is going to make it hard to find her in the day. Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated!
 
Gosh,so sorry to hear about this.I just cross posted on FaceBook,but I do not have any contact info to post there.Do you have a profile? I would certainly do one,and make sure if you can provide lots of pictures.

If she has been spotted,it is very likely she is staying there in the area.Shelties have a tendancy to circle in the same general area.They will nest in at night,and move during the day looking for food.

They also tend to be very scared,skittish,and may even not come to you as the owner.Lots of patience,as they seem to revert into protection mode,and will run away if approached.

I would suggest contacting any shelters,emergency veterinary hospitals,doing business cards with your contact phone number,and handing them out to stores,resturants,anyone you can possibly give to.
They are small enough,that they will keep them handy,versus a large poster they won't carry around.

I would definately look into,getting a live trap.Most shelters,animal control offices have them,and will set them for you.
Bait of choice..probably KFC chicken.Some KFC's will even donate..does'nt hurt to ask!!

Do a craiglist listing,lost & found,make sure you have current & correct contact info.
Phone numbers for cell's & home,vets shoul be on all posters.you have to really call shelters & vets every day to check in,as they sometimes can be busy & lax on not CALLING you~

Contact local Sheltie rescues, in case they get her in as a stray.

Live trap is the way to go, most shelters have one available for a large refundable deposit.
 
Where in Bucks County are you?

I am over the border in NJ near Flemington.

My breeder had a lost Sheltie and there were many things that were done to find her. You can read about her search in this thread:

A couple things I learned from her finding Ruffles is that the dogs usually come out of hiding around dusk.

For some reason, many dogs LOVE the smell of KFC. I have heard this used many times. For a Sheltie, you can use a Have a Heart trap. Many times the local humane societies will have them to loan out to you. Set the trap with KFC in it.

Also, Shelties seem to go feral with humans when lost. Does your dog have a dog friend. For some reason they tend to come to dogs over people. Make sure the dog you take is on a leash, though.

Please don't lose hope. My cousin's sheltie went missing a few years back in Milford NJ and he was found 5 months later about one mile from her house in a junk yard. He was lost over a very bad winter and was OK. Don't lose hope.

IN addition....how about called WPST radio? They are in that area, and maybe they can help you out by putting out a broadcast. The morning DJs seem really nice.

Many people have also used the service www.findtoto.com. They call all homes within a certain radius of where the dog was missing from.

How far away from you was she sighted.

Another idea is to go door to door in the housing development where the dog was seen.

If the park that she was seen near has park rangers, notify them! They are always out and about and can be a great help.
 
Lots of folks on FaceBook asking questions,as to your whereabouts.And I'm sure are willing to help in any way.

Danielle has some great links & tips for youAs she has been very involved in a recent sheltie that had been missing for quite some time,and the pup was brought home.

don't give up,the key is getting word out,and doingsome footwork to the areas this pup has been sighted in.

Foxie in Pa

Ok everyone, not sure if this is the place to put all my info on. Should create a Sheltie Missing facebook page? I live in Warrington and I got and 75%+ confirmation it was her at the cross roads of 152 and Lower State Road in Horsham (Ambler), PA. I set out food last night but I will be surprised if she found it, heading there within the hour to put out more flyers and signs. I am getting a trap today but I was told to first make her feel comfortable. I am just worried about attracting other animals since this was a one time sighting. Please tell me how much information I should post on a public site. I have posted all the info on craigslist in the Philadelphia area. She is posted on my fb site but I will also post it on the SN site. I just have been hearing too many crazy things about people reading your posts and grabbing your animal. I been doing all the calls to the shelters, animal control, vets, etc. Just think it is time to ask for real help! Please pray that someone sees her again today. One guy I was talking to is surprised the officer saw her out at noon. The officer tried to follow her by sight but lost track of where she headed because he was on a traffic stop. Does this seem strange to see her out during the day? The officer just said he cannot tell for sure it was her but he did describe her as a miniature collie, a dog he has never seen before. I have to say, the area where he did see her is along power lines which would make sense since I live a block or so from the power lines. Foxie most likely followed them to Ambler area which is about 4 miles from here. Thanks so much! Love the KFC bait suggestion! Praying for another sighting with the weather warming up a little by the end of the week.

Just a couple of thoughts from what I have seen here. Think of it as hunting (of course to help her though).

She has been gone for a bit so the area she was spotted in is likely her new zone. Consider places that she could eat and drink in that area. You said woods is there a pond/lake? Likely she is bedding down in the woods and foraging during the day, any food sources like a restaurant dumpster? It sounds strange but in the area that she was spotted look for trails in and out of the trees and check for tracks. Most animals are somewhat habitual on stuff like where to sleep and ways to enter exit. Now you might not catch her at those places but it will narrow the area and allow you to live trap with a higher chance of success.

Good luck and it is so good that you have a spotting. Hopefully she is home for Christmas getting spoiled
