Old dogs are scary!

As some know Spitfire is 14.5 and doing well, we were even hand fighting yesterday (he thinks he is SO tough doing that). But last night we go to the bedroom of course as I touch the cookie bin Ian is there. Usually as we pass by he gets up from his nap and follows for a cookie. Sometimes he is in a hard snooze and he has always been a deep sleeper. So you have to touch him which startles him and he jumps up, I hate to startle him but no choice. Last night he did not come. Lightly touch fur, no response. Then I actually rubbed his ear, not movement. I am about to check for life. Then he slowly gets up and gives me a stink eye and comes for his bedtime cookie.

I know the day is getter closer when he won't wake up so he terrifies me when he does that. Even as a pup he could do a dead dog sleep and I would have to triple check he was breathing. Just another way he has taken years off my life :ROFLMAO:

That would be a gut clenching moment all right. I have this somewhat with Meadow who is 5 soon to turn 6. I think in her case though it's her epilepsy meds. She zonks out so hard, then when I wake her up for bedtime potty she seems a bit slow and out of it.

I find the same thing with Lacey, now 15, when she's sleeping. And Checkers, who made it to 17, scared me at least once a day when she was asleep. I found the gentle touch, or even a firmer poke, doesn't work with Lacey. I get her up by clapping my hands once or twice and she jumps to her feet. I hate doing it but it's the most effective. And once she's up, she wants that cookie so there's nothing wrong with her treat radar! Every day is a blessing. 💕

I have noticed that Zulu is sleeping more soundly too. Could also be that he is also getting a little hard of hearing. Sometimes when he is taking a long nap, I stare at him to be sure he is breathing.
He did even as a puppy. You would poke him and a single stink eye would open like 'WHAT'. Now compound that with he does not hear as well. Though the attitude as not diminished. As a puppy after a bit I just figured that was him. Now it is my paranoia.
