hi guys, i adopted a rescue 11 month old puppy from a lady the other day who said this blue merle beauty is a sheltie, he is really HUGE for a sheltie and im wondering if he is a collie. poor boy is skinny and boney. he chowed down a bowl of a food like he never ate before and ended up throwing it all up, broke my heart. i have had him 2 days now and he realizes he can eat slowly now that he will always have food. i know he was left outside for 2 weeks and in indiana it hasnt been the warmest. we have had some potty issues inside, not bad, i found poop in the basement from him, so i have been watching him, and got him to finally poop outside so i gave him a treat and told him good boy.

my 2 shelties have been playing with him, and from what i was told he was timid and shy well not here is not, he is coming out of his shell. i believe he has been beaten as if i move my hand to fast he ducks. he has a home here, im just curious to see if i have a sheltie or a collie, his hair is much thicker than my shelties, here are some photos on my photobucket.

Hmm.. just from the first photo you posted, it does look like a Collie to me than a sheltie.. but I dunno, maybe other members have seen shelties this big?? By chance any idea how much he weighs yet?

Thank you for adopting and I'm glad he's getting use to eating his meals and what not, hopefully he's what you expected and are bale to keep him <3 Best of luck!

To me, he looks part Aussie. That could explain the size. We did the DNA test on Abbie to see if she was a mix. We found out that she was all Sheltie and it stopped nagging at me!

The Collie people would call that a "farm Collie". They tend to have those wider skulls and bigger eyes than the show lines. His eyes are probably also CEA Normal. But if not, that would be a dead give away.

    Collie~

Just looking at him,he looks wide in head. And reminds me of a typical farm herding collie.

Is is neutered? I ask..cause that one picture looks like he is....well you know...having a bit of a humping good time.

Wish you luck, and glad you opened up your home to him.I hope the others are doing well with the newcomer.

The last picture looks like a sheltie head to me. I have seen 20-21" shelties so know that they can get that big. Hard to know for sure.

Regarding if he has been beaten or not. He very well may have but.. My Ember ducks when things move quickly around her head. I have known her since the day she was born and nobody has ever hit her in the head. So that may not be the case.

My thoughts exactly! Bailey has been with me since she was 10 weeks old. She has never been hit by anyone, yet it took her a very long time to allow me to pet her head. Even now, she won't always let me. She still shies away when strangers go straight for head and she was very well socialized. Some dogs just do not like their head to be pet. A hand going straight for your head can be a very scary thing!
There is always the possibility your rescue might have been hit, but just because he shies away when you try to pet his head does not necessarily mean that. Heck there are some dogs that have been physically abused beyond belief, yet still unconditionally love people.

    Good for you, adopting him!
It's hard to tell, since Izzy is so tiny, lol
But I don't know enough to make any educated guess. As long as he is being loved either way, of which I am sure now that he is with you :biggrin2:

Darn...pics won't open for me on my work computer. I'll have to try again from home. My parents first sheltie was actually bigger than my (albeit on the small side) collie  And yes, he was all sheltie, just happened to be the big bruiser of his litter

Very very true. Overall I hear the sheltie temperament is just that they tend to be hand shy (do the head duck thing) and it doesnt mean they were abused. Some show dogs even, with the amount of socialization they get are still sometimes hand shy. Well I mean I always try to teach my friends that when they approach a dog, any dog, you normally shouldn't read out straight for the head but put it in a fist with the palm down and let them sniff you a little first. I mean... heck I wouldnt liek someone coming right at my face before shaking my hand hahaha
