Sandstorms cough started yesterday, he coughs after he barks, no shortness of breath. It's not a persistent cough, just after he barks, once in a while spontaneous. It's a hacking cough that subsides pretty quickly, no vomiting. This a.m. my husband found what looks like a round worm close to him, on the rug. He saved it and will go to the vet tommorow. Sandstorm did not excersize today as a precaution. His appetite is fine and his belly feels okay, not distended. What next? Grrr! We've been giving a little honey and coconut oil. Will try to get a stool sample for the vet. Thanks for any suggestions,
    Karen

Karen - did you give Minnie a worm cure when you got her home?

Here the breeder gives the first time at 3-4 weeks of age
and then at 7-8 weeks of age.
When we get the puppy home the worm cure
should be repeated at 11-12 weeks of age

Coughing is one of the signs of roundworms so especially if you saw one, odds are that's what you're dealing with. Most heartworm meds contain roundworm preventative: Heartguard and Sentinel, for example. Does he get one of those? If not, you'll want to keep him on one once you've cleared this up. Most likely the vet will give you one of the specific dewormers to knock out roundworms. After that you'll want to keep both he and Minnie on monthly heartworm med that includes roundworm protection.

Thanks for all your replies. Sandstorm doesn't have roundworm, what we thought was a roundworm was an earthworm, lol! Both dogs are on heartworm meds year round so I thought it was weird he would have worms, He had an X-ray, the vet thinks he has a tracheal cough, it's not coming from the lungs. The radiologist saw a slightly enlarged heart, not heart failure. Sandstorm's slight lethargy is probably related to that, he doesn't run anymore. We knew he had a heart condition when he had the ultrasound about a year and a half ago, at that time no medication was warranted. The vet prescribed enalapril for thirty days to see how he does on it. Sandstorm is also on antibiotics and Vicodin for his cough, so he cannot drive or operate machinery while he is taking it.

Glad you found out what the problem is, I hope the medication gives him more energy! Sandstorm needs to have energy to run after Minnie!

Phew! Worms are yucky! And no heart failure - yeah! So what is the protocol for enlarged heart?
