So after a 4 year flyball career consisting of practice and green dog attempts Spitfire Esquire got his retirement papers last weekend.

We were at a tournament with him in my lap soaking up petting (his kryptonite) and I realized that I was being unfair to him. He is just too reactive and insane to ever run. Going to practice/tournaments has really helped him on people skills and it has improved his fear. However I realized I was looking at his potential (he would be a small golden rocket) and being unrealistic. He just does not like things to change and panics easily, flyball is just to much activity for his brain.

So he is now back to Offical Orange Horror and terror of Sca, in charge of being our buddy. After 4 years, 0 points, LOTS of frustration he gets his way

Who knows maybe in a couple of years we will add a puppy that can be worse to him than he was to Sca. Though the puppy would also probably spot what a push over Sca is and pile on next to Spitfire

I'm sad that Spitfire wasn't ever able to play. But some Shelties are just like that. Luckily, there are other things he can do besides flyball. I've always said that if/when I get another dog, if they don't want to do flyball, we'll find something else.

He might be good at agility but I have no time for a third hobby that only 'might' work. If he had a pro handler he might do awesome and he loves jumps (though tunnels might be scary )

So he will continue to get by on his looks and evil cuteness :gaah He is my snuggler though as Sca cannot hold still to be snuggled. While Spitfire loves it :hugs

It's very hard to fit the dog to the job we want them to do. I have a few dogs that hate the show ring. I just can't bring myself to force them to show and be miserable. It isn't fun for me and it isn't fun for them. You're smart to recognize that flyball might not be Spitfire's cup of tea (or cookie  ) He'll make a great mascot! And lap warmer / cuddle bug!

And what a great reason for another puppy! :biggrin2:

It's a hard decision to make, but now that you've made it, I'm sure it's a relief. I pulled Spirit out of flyball too- as much as I love it and want to do it, Spirit just didn't like it. I'm sure she was happy when I quit trying to bribe her, beg her, nag her, etc to JUST DO IT!!!!! Something else will turn up for Mr. Esquire :)

The hardest decision to make is to know what to retire and/or acknowledge the dog just doesn't enjoy what we want desperately for them to enjoy. Thank for you for doing what is best for Spitfire.

Spitfire, enjoy your retirement. Enjoy the cuddles, cookies and laughing at Sca as he has to work while you chill.
